5.1mo grabbing food off plate and putting to mouth - what should I do?

do I let him go for it?

Did blw weaning with ds 1 very successfully - loved the whole process but he didn't seem ready until he got to 6mo.

ds2 gets extremely cross if you take whatever he's managed to pilfer off him.
I'm letting him mouth/ taste stuff but don't feel comfortable with the thought of him swallowing anything.

Do I trust he knows what he's doing or do I wait?

btw he is sitting un-supported really well but think he still has the tongue thrust reflex.

I think the whole point of BLW is letting the baby decide... He's telling you he is ready Grin

Ob if he was 12 weeks then I would say it's natural for all babies to put things in their mouths but at this age I would get on with it. Maybe fruit and veg to start, incase of allergies?

DS (PFB) does the same. Let him I say. If he's interested and you're watching him then let him try things. It'll probably be the texture more than the taste that interests him atm. And if he can sit unaided then all the more reason Smile

Ds2 weaned himself at the same age with a milky way he stole off my friend toddler who had got to close. Went straight in his mouth and he was very cross that I took it off him. Grin I did start weaning him then and a month later at Christmas he sat with a small plate of what we were having.
He's telling you he's ready and he isn't far off the 6 months now so give it a go. If it isn't a success you can pull it back a bit and try again later.

I'd say see how he goes if he's showing signs of readiness (not just grabbing food and putting it in his mouth) - there's no magic switch that goes off at exactly 26 weeks Smile

Sounds like he's ready, and the guidelines are just guidelines... On a siller note, I am loving the image of a gorgeous, cute angry baby face when you try to relieve him of his stolen brussels sprout!

Yea, let him get on with it. I breastfed my son for a year, and 5 months is when they need solids.

Chopped banana on a plate is great finger food Grin

stottiecake · 26/12/2011 23:47

to be fair he does put everything in his mouth Grin

but he doesn't mind too much if you take a toy away but gets really upset if you stop him taking food - trying to grab fistfulls of my christmas dinner!!!

So far he has tried a bit of carrot and a homemade potato wedge (and an egg box - that was a bit alarming!)

ds1 has bad allergies (epi-pen for cows milk protein allergy and egg) so extra cautious!

thanks for responses - will go with the flow - not actually give him anything but see what he takes and monitor carefully!
