Hands Up Who Weaned before 6 months

How many people wean before the 6 months deadline. I've just started my DS on solids after four weeks of horrendous feeding frenzies day and night. I deliberated over the decision for a long time and think I made the right decision though I know there are billions of arguments against it. I wonder how many mums out there have done the same and feel they got it right.

I weaned at 4 months because that was the advice 4 years ago, and I didn't know then what I know now. I don't feel I got it right, but I'm not going to beat myself up about it because at the time I thought that the HV knew what she was talking about. I know differently now, and would do things differently if I were to do it again.

Reindior · 17/12/2005 19:28

So did I WWB. It was 4 years ago for me too. Ds was definitely ready for more food, be it solids or a bottle top-up, as he was on the boob every hour. He seemed to love the solids.

Blandmum · 17/12/2005 19:29

i did it at 4 months, that was the advice at the time.

Blandmum · 17/12/2005 19:30

and both took to it like ducks to water

FionaJT · 17/12/2005 19:43

I was determined to stick it out to 6 months (and had a supportive HV) but weaned dd at 22 weeks, and really felt it was the right thing to do. She had been feeding 1 - 2 hourly day and night for sometime and was getting increasingly grumpy and unsettled during the day. When I offered the babyrice she wolfed it down without a second thought and looked round for more, and her behavior did become much more settled as her solid intake increased (night sleeping was another matter..).

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 17/12/2005 19:45

ds1-11 weeks and I'm sure I created a nightmare eater. He would only ever eat the dried packet food that you mix with milk or water, I tried eveything to vary his diet and nothing worked.

ds2-16 weeks and he ate anything I offered (although not anymore). Would only eat home cooked, he'd retch and hurl at dried packets and jars(thank god).

ds3-16 weeks because he wasn't gaining alot of weight. Weaning didn't help and he's still tiny now at 2 yreas old. He'd only ever eat jars (much to my utter horror). He'd never eat lumps and it was nightmare.

HAZELLNUTsroastingonanopenfire · 17/12/2005 19:54

Me !

I decided to do it when dd seemed ready rather than at a specific point - was about 4 1/2 months and she took to it like a duck to water - at almost 11 months I am yet to find a disliked food (although aware that can change at any point) and eats our food and eat lumps v. early etc... feel it was the right thing for her but not necessarily for all babies.

Rudolphthebluenosedteddy · 17/12/2005 19:56

I weaned both mine at around 3 & a half months, as I felt they were ready for solids then. They advised you start to wean at 4 months when my two were babies.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 17/12/2005 19:58

Me!
My ds2 (now 2.3) ate about 40-45oz of hungry baby milk a day and screamed with hunger between feeds between 17 and 19 weeks, so I started him on baby rice at 19 weeks and he transformed into a super smiley boy. I don't think it is so bad - after all when I had dd 7 years ago they told you to wean at 4 months and they all survived. If you can wait until 6 months then that is great, if you can't, you can't. They are all different.

I did keep him pretty much on baby rice, pear and apple until 6 months though, didn't introduce wheat and other potential allergens until later

Belo · 17/12/2005 19:59

I did dd1 at 4 months, as that was the advice. I'm trying to hold of with dd2 until she's 6 months as I just blindly follow the advice. But, dd2 has been on antibiotics and the enthusiasm which she wolfed down her banana flavoured medicine makes me think shes ready. She's 5 months now and is feeding more and more.

Nightynight · 17/12/2005 20:23

yes, all of mine were weaned before 6 months. Ive sounded off about this before but no way could I have carried on exclusively b'feeding after they hit the super-hungry phase. The sheer amount of time involved alone made it impractical. And yes, I did give it some time for my milk supply to increase - still had 4 hour feeds with half hour breaks!

The relevant question to me is, which is the better supplement for breast milk from 4-6 months, baby rice or formula?

feastofsteven · 17/12/2005 20:25

Weaned DS at 18 weeks - virtually forced to by my HV. I did it veeeery slowly - week 1, 1 spoonful of baby rice per day, week 2, 2 spoonfuls of baby rice per day, week 3 before starting any purees

TheholyGHOSTY · 17/12/2005 20:36

DS at 13 weeks (with support from Doc and HV) as he was ready ... he was drinking 6 9oz bottles of hungry baby formula a day and was still not satisfied ... He was from the start and still is the best eater I know. He is 6 years old and eats everything ... his favourite food is Sushi (sounds pretentious but we live in NZ and sushi is as easy to get as Macdonald's) and loves vegetables and all types of salad ... He will try new foods whenever and loves going to restaurants to eat proper food ('no kids menu for me please')
DD I weaned at 20 weeks (fully breastfed) and she (at 22 months) is a shocking eater. The only form of vegetable she will eat is an jar of Organic Vegetable Risotto. Other than that she will only eat sausages, bananas and yoghurt ... I guess it is a balanced diet, protein, fruit and dairy!!!

inameeting · 17/12/2005 20:41

started weaning my underweight refluxy ds at about 4 months - now nearly 6 months. He came on heaps as soon as we started - took more formula, gained weight, became much happier and much less gassy, he loves lumps, hates bland.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 17/12/2005 20:42

Yes, weaned at 5 months with Jessica. The more i look back, the more i wish i had waited.

Will not be making the same mistake with Rebecca if I can help it.

Dont care if Rebecca is still 7 months old and only on milk!

Oh and gave Jessica all that jar/packet crap - BIG MISTAKE! Rebecca will get homemade stuff ONLY!

funnygirl · 17/12/2005 20:57

I weaned at 14 weeks and dd loves her food. HV advised it as she was hungry (DD Not HV!!) I give loads of homemade stuff and the occasional jar. Most of her food is homemade in bulk and frozen as we eat too late for her. I have yet to find domething she doesnt like. Not took keen on mince and tatties but she loves lemon sole.

Mercy · 17/12/2005 21:09

I did because it was the current advice

dd - 4 months, loved it and still a great eater

ds - about 20 weeks (had no idea advice had changed), didn't like it to start with so gave up. 2/3 weeks later, loved it. Now at 22 mths will hardly eat a thing and is super fussy - and has been like this for months.

You just can't tell tbh

ValerieO · 17/12/2005 21:10

Before six months? Certainly not. Their little tummies can't cope with such excess, poor loves.

hercules · 17/12/2005 21:13

ooh, valerieO. This is your second post in this name. Me thinks your trying to be naughty!

galaxy · 17/12/2005 21:23

I weaned at 16 weeks in 2003 as that is what my HV told me to do. dd has had no problems and is a healthy little 3 year old.

PruniStuffing · 17/12/2005 21:25

4 months, as per advice.
That's what it was, that's what I did.

inameeting · 17/12/2005 21:38

LOL hercules

I weaned DS at about 20 weeks I think. It felt like later than most of his contemporaries, who seemed to be weaning as soon as their babies were 4 months.

Am going to aim for nearer six months with DD (12 weeks).

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 17/12/2005 21:45

I weaned my eldest at 3 months and my other 3 at 4 months: in every case on the HV's recommendation. I don't know how you mums exclusively breastfeed until 6 months (I was exhausted by the time I came to weaning) but hats off to those of you who do.
