Hands Up Who Weaned before 6 months

How many people wean before the 6 months deadline. I've just started my DS on solids after four weeks of horrendous feeding frenzies day and night. I deliberated over the decision for a long time and think I made the right decision though I know there are billions of arguments against it. I wonder how many mums out there have done the same and feel they got it right.

I think that's half the problem though. There is so much (mis)information, the medical profession is always changing it's mind, and research can be interpreted and used in so many different ways. I think it's better to go with your instincts - which is not always easy, esp. as a first time mum, anxious to do the right thing.

Queenmab · 17/12/2005 23:26

Just take everything you are told with a pinch of salt. But obviously no more than a pinch...

hercules · 17/12/2005 23:26

Yes, but if you go with 6 months you save yourself faffing with purees.

paolosgirl · 17/12/2005 23:28

You were supposed to puree the food???? I just started off with giving them a chip to suck

Queenmab · 17/12/2005 23:29

I'd rather faff with a puree than be woken from my beauty sleep 3 times a night by a starving baby. I'm sorry if that sounds selfish, but it's true!

hercules · 17/12/2005 23:29

although I do admit to having a problem in general about going against rules. Often thought I have very slight aspergers- in the family as well.

hercules · 17/12/2005 23:29

never had this problem

Queenmab · 17/12/2005 23:30

I did - but DS has slept from 7pm to 7.30am since the day he started on rice! Anyway, rules are made to be broken!

sparklymieow · 18/12/2005 00:07

4 months for all my babies as that was when you were told to wean then.

chipmonksRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 18/12/2005 01:02

4 months for ds1 and ds2 as that was the advice then. Honestly don't think they really needed it. Ds3 was 6 months but was 2 months prem so really 4 months! But that was on paed's advice for prem babies.

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 18/12/2005 01:13

I weaned at 16 weeks I knew it was the right thing to do at the time and it's the advice I was given. DS was at the stage where there was only one formula he could be on and he was taking at most 7ozs in a whole day, he hated the stuff. I will never forget the day I gave him pear and rice - he looked at me as if I was the most amazing person on the planet There was no looking back from that day onwards and subsequently he became a milk monster after that too!

Hulababy · 18/12/2005 08:08

Weaned DD (who is now 3y8m) at 15 weeks after talking with the HV. At the time all the guidance was 4 months anyway.

juicychops · 18/12/2005 09:00

i did. imo my ds was ready so i did what i thought was best for him. he is now 11 months and eats everything and anything!!

DinosaurInAManger · 18/12/2005 09:29

I wish I hadn't weaned my DS2 at four months - I suspect that I may have given him a lifetime problem with his weight .

Twiglett · 18/12/2005 09:32

DS was weaned at 14 weeks .. I plead ignorance as it was when guidelines were 16 weeks and I thought I was doing the right thing as no-one told me I could harm him by feeding him early .. I got that right AT THE TIME because that's what I knew AT THE TIME

DD was 26 weeks because advice changed .. I feel I got that right because I knew about the risks and research regarding early weaning and I would have been remiss to do any different

PantomimEDAMe · 18/12/2005 09:40

Weaned ds at 18 weeks I think, because dh was desperate to start feeding him. Dh loves cooking. Regret it now, because ds has eczema and had it very badly as an older baby - I worry that the two are connected (although dh has eczema so it was always a possibility). If I had another, I'd try to wait for six months. Ds gobbled it up, though.

Marneychristmas · 18/12/2005 09:42

I weened at 4 months because HV adviced me to and dd was a hungry baby.

MyXmasPuddingSixpenceworth · 18/12/2005 09:53

me. on hv advice.

5sleepstilxmas · 20/12/2005 13:07

both my dds were weaned between 3 - 3 1/2 months and have no regrets. just started to weann dd2 now

5sleepstilxmas · 20/12/2005 13:08

ps, just a little rusk at tea time, not properly weaned

OComeOliveFaithfOil · 20/12/2005 13:17

4 months for both, followed Gina Ford with both, very religiously with dd1 (first baby syndrome) and loosely with dd2.

merrycompo · 20/12/2005 13:18

4 months for me

biglipskissinunderthemistletoe · 20/12/2005 13:53

5 mths as DD was a very hungry baba as she was going thru 9 bottles a day on white sma (7 - 8 oz each) so we decided to wean her and she slowly was taking less milk

JonesTheSteamingSanta · 20/12/2005 13:56

DD was weaned at 4 months - that was the advice at the time.

Waited until 6 months with DS (the advice had changed by then) but he wasn't happy at all, so we stopped and tried again at about 7 months. Much happier then.

Bugsy2 · 20/12/2005 13:58

BibBabBob, the guidelines do very clearly say that you should take into consideration the individual needs of each baby - so please don't feel you have done anything wrong.
It is a very recent recommendation to leave weaning until 6 months. My two are 6 & 3.5 and my ravenous ds was weaned at 16 weeks and my less hungry dd at 20 weeks. At the time that was perfectly acceptable & no one thought it damaging or a bit soon.
