Popped in my local co-op today and a 900gm tub of toddler follow on milk has increased from £7.30 to £9.40 !!

First of all i thought it was a mistake but soke to co-op customer care and they said its correct. The rrp is now £9.40 ...............i didn't think they 'd stop so low as to profiteer out of baby milk.
Shocking price increase and the co-op said other supermarkets will follow.

Anybody heard anything about this ?

Thank for info OP.

confusedperson · 14/05/2011 10:00

OP, thanks for letting us know. I was in dilemma which formula milk to chose
(was thinking SMA because they were cheaper), now I won't chose SMA. (thanks god I am raising my second and last child and in few months time I will be out of the formula dillema).

RitaMorgan · 14/05/2011 11:18

Aptimil hiked their prices recently too, so SMA is probably still cheapest.

Ryoko · 14/05/2011 11:49

EVERYTHING is going up in price, we are all fucked, the government is screwing us at every turn and all we do is moan at each other on pointless threads, instead of getting out their and demanding a better standard of living, drop in fuel duty, cap on energy bills etc, it all adds up, a recent study said we have the least amount of money in our pockets after tax/bills in 30 years, thanks to high prices we are walking into a recession, all the government ever says is we need to pay off our debts, will not help if we are not spending and everything goes down the shiter will it.

I'm buying the cheapest basics of everything and even that is expensive, the supermarkets should do own brand baby milk and food at a lower cost same as they do with the nappies, it's all the same stuff anyway.

Everyone is out to make money, why single out baby milk as an evil the likes of which the world has never seen? it's business it's the same with everything, go see the countries where the fields are left bare as the farmers can't compete with the subsidised US/EU produce, see the come ons to buy cheap cars/bikes to make people a slave to the oil companies when they where doing perfectly fine without.

PaperView · 14/05/2011 11:55

The cost of EVERYTHING has gone up. Something i buy regularly at 88p went up overnight to £1.29 and is now something ridiculous like £1.98 less than a month later.

Is your issue with the price of formula milk? With SMA itself? With the issues in 3rd world countries? I am sorry but i can't tell from any of your posts.

Ryoko · 14/05/2011 13:24

Yes PaperView, thats what happens, fuel is getting more money, they have to drive everything from the fields to the factory and the shop, (while the government still demands around 70% tax on the stuff) electricity is going up, the factories have to pay for that as well,

Then of course every time the cost of delivery/manufacturing, ingredients goes up, both the producers and the retailers add there little bit of sly extra cost on the top to make a few more pennies while they have a good excuse to.

LittleDonkin · 14/05/2011 23:44

My sister got a 1.6kg tin of SMA 6 months plus from Asda the other day and it was £4!!!!!!!

Ryoko · 15/05/2011 10:37

Thats because it's the arse end of the baby event and they are reducing stuff to clear, my ASDA has fuck all left unless you like johnsons baby shampoo.

LittleDonkin · 15/05/2011 22:40

I popped into Asda today and the SMA green toddler milk is only £5 a tin. I dont think that price has anything to do with the baby event. I wish my sister had picked me a couple of tins of the 6 months plus when they were 4 quid!!!!

NorfolkNChance · 15/05/2011 22:45

HIPP has gone through the roof too, I used to get it because DD is underweight and preffered it to cow's milk but she is back on the blue top now!

OP your toddler can have rice, soya or lacto free milk at this age, might owrk out a lot cheaper than forumla (especially the carton rather than fresh stuff)

bermudaotter · 18/05/2011 16:10

Lets get this back.

ALL SMA MILK has gone up,increase of 33% without any justification.
If your baby/toddler is using it i suggest you get out there and buy it up before it hits £10 a tin.

bermudaotter thanks for the info, might buy more for the cupboard while I see it at its normal price. Thank goodness DD is nearly 10 months and we're not using it for that much longer

bermudaotter · 19/05/2011 15:56

you're welcome.
this issue has caused quite a storm on baby and bump............much less so on mums net. Must be a lot of well to do mums on here who aren't bothered by a 33% increase.

I think we should boycott SMA. I have just changed my daughters formula cos I think that it is not on to put it up by 2 quid a go. And for all those that say that toddler milk is not necessary....what about those of us that could not 100% breast feed and had to top up our babies. I could not have given a new born normal milk! I think the government should do something.

They always go on about Breast is best, but what about those that have no choice!

ginmakesitallok · 30/05/2011 20:48

Bermuda - I don't think it's because folk on Mumsnet aren't bothered by a 33% increase its just that you haven't made your point very well. Toddler milk is completely unnecessary for the vast majority of toddlers - it's just a marketing ploy. If a toddler does need it for some reason then generally it can be given on prescription. Therefore if the price increase bothers you - STOP BUYING IT!!

Newborn formula is a different issue - I think!

Pacman76 · 15/01/2016 07:37

I went into asda and to my surprise my sma hungry baby has not just went up to 9.99 but the amount has been lowered from 900 grams to 800 this should not be allowed.
