Anyone got a baby reluctant to eat savoury food?

Hi all,

My DS was very premature, I started weaning him at six months actual age as advised, it went pretty well to start with. He ate what I gave him and cut down gradually on BFing by himself. He is well below the bottom centile even for his corrected age so I have been advised to give him high fat foods, pudding at every meal and as much as he will eat.

He got ill a couple of weeks ago and wasn't keen to eat at all, and increased BFs again. I thought we were back on track but for the last few days he has been really fussy, refusing the savoury foods he has always liked. He will however eat puddings especially custard by the ton.

Just wondering if anyone has been through this and if anyone has any good savoury recipe ideas I can try. I'm worried about him having a sweet tooth but I don't feel I can cut down on puddings, he is so small he needs the calories. I still BF him on demand and he has a bottle of formula at night (of which he is taking more and more). He's 11 months old.

Any ideas?

Has he got any teeth coming through at the moment? both my DCs went through similar whenever they were cutting teeth. will he still eat the custard if you put some stewed fruit in it or mash a banana half in it? (FWIW DD is still a yogurt monster at 15mo, I do think a lot of babies just prefer their puds, as it tends to be the one thing they can continue to eat through teething!) Also, does he eat mashed or finger food? if it's mash, maybe try him with little bits of finger food, see if that interests him? (appreciate weaning a premmie is diff, so don't know how he would take to this).

Thanks Kate, he is just cutting his first tooth so maybe it is that. We are trying a bit more finger food as well as hiding stuff in the custard

Hopefully it's just a phase!
