Animal Crossing how to go to sleep

My child has started playing Animal Crossing but can't get to sleep?

She's walking into the cot in the tent and the character gets in but it doesn't go to sleep and doesn't go to the next day.

There's nothing that happens when she gets into the cot. No talking that comes up like I've read should probably happen.

How do you go to sleep and get to the next day then if this doesn't pop up??

The first few days are in real time I think

It's real time. You can't sleep except the very first day which skips to the next which may have confused her. You can change the date and time on the switch to move days (but if she buys turnips don't go back in date as they will spoil).
