Nintendo switch online code help

My son had requested FC25 for Christmas, but it looks like you can only purchase it as an online code (rather than a physical game card). We have never gone down the route of playing online or buying a membership etc. How does it work? Do we need a membership to be able to play an online code game? If so, what do people recommend?

FC25 is available on a cart for Nintendo switch, so you can just buy a cart like usual. Argos have it in stock right now along with a few other places.

However if you want to buy a game digitally you do it through the eshop directly on the Nintendo switch. Sometimes you see codes on other sites cheaper but quite often these are stolen codes that can be revoked later and you lose your money. It's better to stick to carts and directly from the eshop.

Carts and eshop games work exactly the same except you download the game from the shop and need enough storage space on the switch. The switch base storage is quite small but you can buy an expansion card.

As for online membership, there is no difference between carts and downloads. Online membership is required to play online with other people but isn't required for playing offline alone. You won't need to do anything different just because you downloaded the game.
