Anyone in the know about this game please?

Son says there's an option to purchase without story mode and that means he cannot get to the nasty stuff, even if he wanted to. Is this correct? He says he only wants to play it as a car game with his friends but I know it's got a bad reputation.

Is he pulling a fast one or is it a two mode game? Many thanks

Just asked my 15 Yr old.... he says "that's bullshit" 🤣
He says you can't buy without story mode. It's all built in.
Tell him nice try!

UnbelievableLie · 28/06/2024 16:56

How old is he?

Raggydollz · 28/06/2024 16:57

I think you can play it online which is without the storyline so he has a point

They won't follow the 'story' but will still be able to see everything. Beat up prostitutes etc, take them in your car.(apparently you don't 'see' anything but the car bounces & hear the moaning)
In story mode you interact with the characters more, as it leads you through the story, so will be exposed to more bad language.

First, how old is he?

I'm 38 and first played GTA when I was 11 and have been playing it on and off since then. I've have even made and met friends through the online game. I also know someone who works in the development team.

First off, GTA is a British satirical view of America. Yes, there is plenty of bad language and he will hear that through the online game (thats what he is asking to play). But he is correct in saying it has a large Car enthusiastic player base and has had many car/racing related updates recently.

If he is younger than 14 it would be a no from me. Otherwise, I'd let him play it.

You can nowadays. They've split the online/story mode into two different games.

Online has a kind of story mode though, but it doesn't require a purchase.

Mixed responses! Thank you all really helpful. He's 14, and he's shown me that you can buy it separately but he also knows I don't know my stuff.

And he's well into cars.

If he's 14 and really into cars, and you don't mind him hearing bad language, I'd let him play. It has deep tuning/car racing scene. If you want to review first, you could look up Broughy1322 on YouTube, that will give you a quick look into what he's wanting to do on it.

cheesybeans1234 · 28/06/2024 17:25

I'm fine with the bad language and stuff I know he exposed to all sorts at school and in other games he plays, it's just this game has a reputation for some really nasty stuff. Beating up prostitutes was one of the things I'd heard that just sounded grim.

Why i'm ok with him playing shot em up games but not beat her up games?

Prostitutes used to be alot more prevelant in the earlier gta games, no so much now. But you go and view strip joints in the online game FYI. It really depends what he does.

It's British satirical view of America. I would be worried because GTA 5 online has a lots of trolls/hackers/people who use mods, people who might potentially cyberbully him -- perhaps it doesn't happen, but better safe than sorry.

Just playing the story mode (nor going online) is fun but main chatacters aren't good people. Even if it's just story mode he would be playing and your DS has school, it would be a no from me -- it's a huge timesink, and it deals with very "adult" (18+) themes.

Cosycover · 29/06/2024 14:51

Yeah 14 is fine for online mode.

He can make a private party with his friends and go into an npc world. There's no other real players in that option.

cassiatwenty · 29/06/2024 14:56

@Cosycover Oh cool, I didn't know that.

I like the game personally (especially Radio Stations) but I don't have a lot of time for it.

cheesybeans1234 · 01/07/2024 18:56

Thank you all for taking the time to advise. He's got the game, bought the single version and seems to be playing it as a car game He's said he can still get to a particular street or area of the game that's got the prostitutes, drug deals and so on but he says he has to seek it out rather than it being all through the whole experience. So far I'm happy enough. I don't mind him seeing rough stuff I just didn't like the idea of him being into s game that was just about immoral violence. So far so good.
