What game should I buy? Maybe a Zelda?

I have an idea that I'd like to buy a game for the Nintendo switch that I can play with the kids. They're very active/sporty and when they get home from camp/clubs they just want to veg/game, I reckon if you can't beat em, join em!

So, necessary info is:

  • 12yo dd, 10yo ds
  • we have two switches, one is normal, one is oled
  • dd likes playing animal crossing, Minecraft, 2 point campus
  • ds likes playing fifa, Minecraft, Pokémon scarlet, super smash bros
  • we all play Mario kart and Mario odyssey together, well we used to, they got a bit bored and it always ends in a fight!
  • I'm not a gamer per se but do enjoy it and play a lot of puzzle/'room' games on my phone

I've heard of a lot of people playing Zelda games together as a family, and the kids seem reasonably receptive to the idea... but I don't really have a clue any further than that! Any thoughts or experience would be very much appreciated!

Zelda is good but ca be a little tricky

Kirby & Pikmin games are good and usually there are decent demos available to try first

Zelda is more of a single person game and can be quite tricky for younger players (although you will probably enjoy it). Mario party, Mario 3D world, most of the Lego games, and just dance are all fun games that can be played together.

Thank you so much @lostinfusion and @YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake your replies are very appreciated!
I feel a bit sad that Zelda won't work, maybe it was just for me that I actually want it!
I'll look at Kirby, that sounds possible. I think I'm quite done with Mario but will keep an open mind! Thanks again Grin

Crash Bandicoot? Spyro?

Get Zelda for yourself. I prefer Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom.

Minecraft Dungeons sounds like it might fit the bill - An adventure game set in the Minecraft universe.

I don't know how well Zelda would go down - there's a fair bit of boring, but when my kids played dungeons they seemed to quite enjoy it.

If you like running around just having fun, Splatoon is fantastic. I quite enjoy a game of Splatoon myself :D

I found Zelda breath of the wild incredibly boring. The weapons constantly break and some of the puzzles don’t really make much sense. The horse is kind of hard to control too so you sort of bounce off the walls and off trees and things. I like Harvestella it’s a farming game with an rpg storyline. Some of the quests are a little dull and wordy but I prefer it to Zelda. Not really one to share with the kids though it’s single player.

Overcooked is hilarious to play with multiple people

Dh and ds are playing tears of the kingdom together, dh has the controls a lot of the time but DS often has good ideas. He has a book (the tears of the kingdom complete guide I think) that means he often knows what to do when dh doesn’t. It’s good for modelling perseverance when things are tough!

Hard agree! I've been gaming for 2 decades and loved Gameboy Zelda games but I can't bring myself to play BotW. Its sooooo boring. If you like farming rpgs try Stardew Valley if you haven't already:)

cornflower21 · 02/08/2023 16:46

My son likes Trine.

Nemesias · 02/08/2023 16:48

Oh yes I love overcooked and stardew valley

Jijithecat · 02/08/2023 16:49

Zelda is good, but how about something like Wario Ware or a Mario Party game so you can all play together.

AllotmentTime · 02/08/2023 16:51

LOVE Zelda Botw and so do my 10yo and 7yo. Clearly it's polarising 🤣
Second Overcooked 2 as well. Although that's mostly for me and DH. Better than marriage counselling 🤣🤣

AllotmentTime · 02/08/2023 16:52

And yes get Zelda for yourself! 😉

cordiality · 04/08/2023 22:21

Oh yes I forgot we had Overcooked! All was fine til we got to a level where we were in air balloons and everything was on fire and my ds got far too stressed and had to run screaming from the room! Might reintroduce it now he's a bit older...
Some great suggestions here, I'll ponder Zelda for myself and investigate all these other games... I haven't even heard of loads of them!
