oculus quest VR headset

My son is desperate for one for Christmas, but I know nothing about them. For a start I wouldn't typically spend anything like that amount of money on something, so he's going to use some vouchers he already has plus have it as a joint birthday and Christmas present. So a lot is riding on it being a good choice!

Firstly, are there ever any deals on them? Seems like it's £399 for headset and hand held controllers plus Beat Sabre game for a 125gb memory, or £499 for the same but with more memory.

Secondly, do we need more memory? How many games does the 'basic' 125gb memory hold?

Finally, is it easy to set up? I have a Facebook account so guess it would need to be in my name and linked to that (my son doesn't have Facebook) but do we need anything else? I have a laptop but no desktop for example.

Thanks!

I don't have any answers but I have a grandson who wants one of these too. I hope someone comes along and gives us a clue!

I have one, for me not a teenager Grin.

Unfortunately for some reason they've just put the price up hugely -until a month or two ago the 125gb was £299 everywhere but they've put the price up for both models by about a quarter. You might have some luck closer to Christmas e.g. prime day. Sometimes they do a deal where they include a better headstrap which I would recommend as the one that comes with it isn't the comfiest!

If he gets a friend to "refer" him before he sets his up he can get £23 quid off games which is handy. Also tell him not to buy loads of games at once as if you don't buy one for a while they send you discounts. You can get lots of free games too.

I'm not sure about the storage, I find the 125gb fine but then I play smaller/free games you can delete once you've finished them - if he wants to play loads of the big games simultaneously he might need more.

You don't need a Facebook account to sign up for it anymore, he can just create his own meta account. I found it easy to set up.

It's completely stand alone so you don't need a laptop or desktop -however if you do have one that he plays PC games on then you can link the quest up to that - you can use either but it has to be a fairly good laptop/PC to be able to play the games in the first place.

I think @latetothefisting has answered most of your questions so I'll just add that last year there were lots of deals for the oculus around Black Friday and/or closer to Christmas. I remember because I bought mine in August as a Christmas present and was gutted that I could have got it for cheaper AND got store credit with it too!

We have the 125gb version (2a, 2c using it as a house present) and it's been enough but we're not heavy gamers. It's great fun, esp Bear Saber which never goes on sale as far as I can tell. It's the only console where, if they upgrade it, I'd probably buy the new version asap rather than waiting 5-10 years for it to drop in price 😊

We've got one and it is great. We have the standard amount of storage and it has been fine, although we haven't bought loads of games.

I agree about the head strap.

How old is your son? I believe it isn't recommended under a certain age (maybe 12? ) due to having an effect on a child's developing eye sight.

Oh, and I'd add don't bother paying extra for the allegedly fancy headstrap that oculus offer. It's not great and the weight of the headset on your face can make playing for longer periods uncomfortable. I'd recommend the BOBO VR headset (possibly bobo vr halo?) which I bought from Ali Express. Ordered well in advance of Christmas so it has time to get here. It's really good at balancing the headset weight. If money's not an issue, there's a new version of this headset that enables a spare battery to be attached to it, to extend play time - a great idea as you don't get much playing time before having to recharge.

Can I please ask if you can play Roblox on this? I have googled but I don't understand what I'm reading!

OxfordDog · 18/09/2022 14:15

Thanks for the info everyone. He's 12, I have read about the eye development issue too. I think 12+ was fine but i do need to be wary as he has younger siblings who would want to play too. Good to hear that the (cheaper) lower memory edition will be fine and that it's stand alone. I'm not technical enough to cope with complications!
