Help me get started!

I’m thinking of asking my partner for a games console for my birthday, but am a bit clueless! I had a PS1 when I was a teenager, then a boyfriend about 10 years ago had a PlayStation… I enjoyed playing Assassin’s Creed and I think COD (there were short games that were 10 mins long that were quite addictive!).

im therefore thinking of getting a PlayStation again, but not sure if this is the best plan over an Xbox etc.

I don’t care about having the latest version, especially as a PS5 seems to cost a million pounds, so was thinking a PS4. Is there any reason I shouldn’t go for this?

I’d like to be able to play lots of games with my partner.. we’ve got young kids so lots of evenings at home! Any suggestions on good games?

I have an Xbox, so can't really help with PS4. But, what I will say, is that I pay for the subscription (games pass, I'm sure PlayStation will have an equivalent) and play games available through that most of the time. Think of it like Netflix for gaming. So I wouldn't worry about buying tons of games if you don't want to.

If you got a PS4 and the PlayStation extra subscription (the PlayStation version of gamepass - it has over 400 games to download and play for free) then you'd get access to almost all of the assassin's creed games for free which would be a nice starting point to get back in.

While I love my PS5 and use it daily, there are not that many new games on it that won't run on a PS4 so if you haven't played any of the big games of the last few years the PS4 will keep you busy for a long time.

If you liked Assassin's Creed I assume you like action games in general and I recommend the following:

Ghost of Tsushima
God of War
Horizon Zero Dawn
Spiderman 2018 / Miles Morales
InFamous Second Son
Death Stranding

I think almost all of those are free with the subscription and 10-20 new games are added every month.
