Please help me with a console!

I literally know nothing about gaming post PlayStation 2!
My 5 year old son was really into sonic so I dusted off the old mega drive and he was more then happy with that for a good 6 months.
He's moved onto mario now and is really into it. I can't get any kind of mario game on the iPad or mega drive so I am just wondering what I should get next?
I know the obvious answer is a Nintendo switch, however, me and his dad are going to get this for his birthday present. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can get in the meantime to keep him happy?
I've seen a Wii U for sale on Cex but got really confused with the cost during being called "unboxed", "discounted" etc....

You can get Super Mario run and Mario Kart tour from Google play store if you have any Android devices

Ahhh I don't o let apple! They do do 2 mario games but they're not what he wants. I was hoping to get a console where I can get different versions of the games etc.

You could probably get a cheap wii bundle off of Facebook marketplace - I know they’re (very) old now but ours still gets used occasionally. The Mario games are pretty classic and haven’t changed much (except for odyssey)

CEX sells used electronics, so the description just relates to that…..boxed (comes in box) and unboxed is without. I’ve got an Xbox from there before, no issues with it but the prices aren’t that much cheaper than Curry’s, Smyths or similar that sell brand new.

The WIIU was so undermarketed it's a crying shame. It's a decent bit of kit really.

You can get a mini SNES that has Mario Kart and Super Mario World. There’s also a mini NES with Super Mario Bros 1 & 3.

I also have a mini mega drive that takes the old cartridges and you can pick up the old games for a few quid on eBay.
