13yo DS went to a friend’s house and really enjoyed playing with this. He (and we) is very un-tech savvy, and pretty naive really, so had never seen one before. He has a switch, but only plays Minecraft and fifa and has no interest in other games that he’s been given like mario odyssey, some racing game and animal kingdom.

We are thinking about buying the oculus 2 headset for his birthday. Is there anything we should buy to go with it please, or anything we should know? In particular in relation to buying games? I am concerned that there seem to be few safeguards on things like chat rooms and in the games, and he is really easily swayed and distracted.

I’d be grateful to learn more to try and weigh up whether this is something we should be encouraging!

You will need a smartphone to set it up with, and also a FaceBook account and PayPal/credit card for buying games.

Yes, the chat rooms, social games are a free for all and there are some vile adults (and children) who play in them. If that is a concern, you can watch what he is playing on the phone it is set up with, or cast it to the TV (using something like a Chromecast), so you can supervise and step in if needed.

Thank you. I think we will leave it for now. He isn’t equipped to deal with this at the moment and I could do without it to be honest!

I think the first response was quite negative so will offer an alternative view. We have had our oculus 2 for about 18 months. Both my 9 and 6 year olds play it. You don’t need a smart phone to set it up. We all really enjoy the games and events that you can watch. We don’t download social games and it is controlled so they can’t just go offer buying and downloading things without permission. There are some really fun puzzle and sports games and it’s a completely different immersive experience to a game on a tv or computer. There is also a limited battery life so it’s not something that they can play on for hours. I normally let them have 30 min on it and they are happy with that.
