Which platform for Minecraft?

DS10 loves playing Minecraft. He has been playing it on a Chromebook but it’s been deleted, I think no longer supported. He also plays it on my iPad when he can wrestle it off DD12. For Christmas both DC say they’d like a computer that allows them to play Minecraft together at the same time. I don’t know where to begin. Would I be better off buying them something like a PlayStation (we don’t have a console at the moment), or a laptop each which can be used for schoolwork too? I looked at gaming laptops but even the entry models seem to be expensive, is a gaming laptop necessary to play Minecraft properly? Any advice much appreciated thank you.

A gaming laptop isn't essential. We have an Airbook which is the entry level Mac and DS plays minecraft on it the whole time including the multiplayer games, you can hear the fan kicking in but there's no issues. Obviously cheaper computers are available but it's not really a processor intensive game.
