Minecraft help

DS wants to play minecraft with a friend (whilst in different houses). We have minecraft on a desktop Mac so it's the Java version I think.

We've tried to link the computers before but we can't get it to work. We don't have the invite friend option on our edition. They've managed to find our username but the invite never comes through.

I think they must be on a different edition but does anyone know if we can get them playing together and if so, how?

No idea on that one sorry. Do you know what devices his friends are using?

I think it might just be a pc. Another friend is on PlayStation

Oh it took me weeks tog get my DS set up with online access. I had initially locked everything down when he first got his PS4 but obviously as he got older he wanted to play online. I found that I had to create him a new account, with a fake DOB that made him over 14 (I think) due to PS online restrictions (he's 12).

Weirdly the login is in my partners name (they play it together), so the dob thing shouldn't be an issue I don't think?

If your son has Java, then the other person has to have the Java edition.

I fucking hate minecraft as they make it so fucking complicated.

Iggly · 15/09/2021 17:46

First check you have the same editions though!

Java is only available on PC/Mac
ilkleymoorbartat · 15/09/2021 17:49

Ok that's helpful. So basically it's a cross platform issue.

If your son has Java Minecraft, he can only play with others who have Java (ie PC version). A Microsoft login or Xbox login is also needed I think - I think you can have a username in Minecraft without it being your Minecraft Microsoft login so might that be what he has given his friend?

The other version of Minecraft is Bedrock, which is cross-platform - ie you can play across devices that have Bedrock. My DS and I play, him on his Switch and me on my tablet. You can also get Bedrock for the PC, have you definitely got Java and not the Bedrock version on the PC?

Hope you can get it sorted!

On the Mac we definitely only have Java. I tried to download bedrock on my iMac but it seems like only Java is available for iOS Mac?

I have managed to download bedrock it for iPad but ds isn't used to playing like that so makes it tricky.
