@lollipopsandrainbows This is how my daughter started out, so I started 'helping' and now I'm hooked..... 😁
She needs to do daily tasks to get nook miles, so catch fish and sell them, Weed, plant new flowers, water flowers. When selling fish she can buy equipment such as rods, axes, catapult, pole to leap over the streams and a ladder.
Pick up twigs, hit rocks with the axe, collect stones/clay/iron all so you can make your own tools.
Talk to the other islanders often.
Pick up message bottles on the beach. Pop the flying balloons as they contain bells, items etc.
Dig up fossils (the star shapes that pop up in the ground) then donate to museum or sell.
Once she's "got" it, it will be easier.
To be honest, my daughter fannies around changing clothes and I do most of the leg work.
