We have bought our kids an x box series s for Christmas, as well as an oculus VR headset.

And our internet is broken. So basically, in the morning they are getting things that don’t work. I’m gutted.

Please can somebody walk me thought either (a) connecting via our iPhones or (b) borrowing somebody else’s internet in an empty house?

I have bought an Xbox games pass on Amazon.

Thanks so much

They can play the games just not with friends.

They’ll have to wait until you get WiFi sorted

You can link to you 4G via a phone bit that will take up a lot of data

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 21:24

Thank you. What about going to somebody’s house and downloading things then coming home ?

Also when you day a lot of data, how much is a lot?

Have you brought games in discs? They will work

Or yes go to a friends and download the games, they can play but not with friends

It’s similar to downloading movies only they need a decent connection to play.

Google how to set up personal hot-spot from iPhone

Yellowcar2 · 24/12/2020 22:12

If you are with TESCO mobile they are giving everyone on a monthly contract free unlimited data tomorrow.

Chocolate4me · 24/12/2020 22:13

Vodafone was also doing unlimited data for 30 days

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 22:15

We are with ee

Have you set up the xbox already? That may need to do some hefty upgrades if you haven't.

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 22:37

No!

Ouch. It took me several hours when ds had his. I'd been warned on here so I set it up before he finished for the holidays.

BluebellsGreenbells · 24/12/2020 22:52

Yes some games take hours to down load!

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 22:55

Oh we are fucked then

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/12/2020 22:58

Have you got them some little stocking fillers etc?
My dc would have understood - the Internet is getting fixed and in the meantime let's watch a dvd and play a card game type of thing.
Try and not let it wreck your day together.
They're still getting some very exciting gifts.

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 23:06

I’m just gutted. A pandemic is one thing
But we’ve also been bereaved this month. I was trying to give them a decent Christmas and it’s totally fucked up

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/12/2020 23:11

I'm sorry. The VR might be your best bet. I hope your broadband is sorted soon.

sleighstar · 24/12/2020 23:12

When will your WiFi be fixed?

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 23:13

Can somebody say something concrete? Like ‘take your VR to somebody’s house and do XYZ?’

OP posts:
CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 23:15

No clue when it will be fixed. They told us 3.30 pm. I’m
Disgusted with BT. We have no sky or landline. Plans to watch a movie were buggered. Zoom call
To family tomorrow also fucked. On top of the bereavement I just csbt believe this

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/12/2020 23:24

I don't know about the VR :(

Cuddling57 · 24/12/2020 23:27

How much mobile data do you have? Can do zoom on mobile data surely?
And do you have the option to take the ps to someone's house?
What games will they want downloaded? Did it come with some included?

Cuddling57 · 24/12/2020 23:30

Have a look on YouTube for a guide on how to download the games and google if they can be played offline if you are planning to take the Xbox up an empty house to use their internet.
Could you ask neighbours?
Can take hours to download some games.

8obbingabout · 24/12/2020 23:44

Ask neighbours either side if they will allow you to connect to the internet even if its just for tomorrow.

Depending on how close their house is you could reach their wifi connection in one of the rooms in your house.

Good Luck

DeRigueurMortis · 24/12/2020 23:50

You're not fucked.

We had our internet down for 10 days due to a severed cable.

We looked at our mobile contracts and bought a £25 extension package to my current contract for a months unlimited data (this was EE).

Took minutes.

I then set up a mobile hot spot on my mobile phone and we connected all the devices to that.

Worked fine - DH working from home (zoom calls) plus DS gaming and me on MN Grinetc.

Go to the website of your mobile provider and look at what data options they have.

Tinkerbellone · 24/12/2020 23:54

Hi OP. When my EE hub went down- EE gave us extra data to cover us.
We are a family of 5. We used our phones as hotspots and were able to access what we needed. xx

CountessFrog · 24/12/2020 23:55

Thank you I will go to the ee website now 👍
