DD played her friends Switch the other day and now wants one for Christmas.
What exactly will she need to get started. Presumably the console plus games. Will she need extra controllers, an online subscription, headphones, case?
I'd appreciate some advice
Thanks.

Can I join in? Nothing to offer but im wondering this too.

HamSandwichKiller · 30/11/2020 08:35

Joining too.
I've bought a Switch with 2 games. I think a friend is going to add us to the online subscription but am totally clueless.

I strongly recommend a case, I brought a hard style one from Amazon where you can also store the little game cartridges it's ideal if you take the switch out the house. You don't really need extra controllers as a lot of the games if you have multiple players you can just pass the controller around (plus their expensive), for games 1,2 switch is a good party game and easier for younger children.

Ooh, I was going to ask a switch question. Sorry to hijack op...
Does anyone know if the games my dd has on her switch lite will play on the console version if I buy that too?

ExplodingCarrots · 30/11/2020 09:55

I'd highly recommend a case. We bought an extra set of controllers purely because both me and DD play the switch so one set is charging whilst the other is in use. Plus when we play just dance with more than 2 players you'll need the extra controllers . You can get good accessories bundles on Amazon at quite a cheap price.

If you want to do any online play, buy games on the online store etc you will need to buy a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. You can have a family account so everyone is under one subscription.

@scrumpledtitskin
I've just found this on the Nintendo website . (I'm attaching a picture, hopefully you can see it)

Thank you for all your responses.
Can I also ask what is the difference between the switch and switch lite, (apart from about €100.)

@Explodingcarrots thank you.

Op, as far as I'm aware the console is played through the TV or monitor, and also the controllers can be used as a mobile gaming device.

The switch lite is just the handhold version.

I think! 😁

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/11/2020 11:00

Do you need the subscription to play the console?

gingeristhenewblack43 · 30/11/2020 11:09

Switch newbie here too!

I've bought my DD the switch console for her birthday next week as you can play it on the TV or as a hand held device.

The switch lite is hand held only and you can't play it on your tv.

If you want to play games online with friends then you need the online subscription is my understanding.

ExH has bought DD a case for her console as it will travel between our homes.

ExplodingCarrots · 30/11/2020 12:06

@DobbyTheHouseElk you only need a subscription for online play. You can still play games as normal without a subscription.

Mumdiva99 · 30/11/2020 12:17

The online subscription I'm pretty sure is less than £20 for the year.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/11/2020 12:37

Thanks.

Console and at least one game yes.

Extra controller, maybe. The 'full' Switch comes with a pair of "Joycons" and a lot of games will do two player with each having one. The Switch Lite is handheld only. Some games don't support handheld mode and would require a separate controller (and a stand, and good eyesight to see the small screen at a distance; all round it might be better to skip those games.)

Headphones, if you want DD to use them and she doesn't have a pair already. The Switch takes regular headphones, not sure about ones with a mic.

Case, if she'll be taking it out and about.

Screen protector would be a good idea. The Switch and Switch Lite both have plastic screens which are prone to scratching and a protector will prevent that.

Thanks so much for all the advice.
