I am completely out of my comfort zone in here but I need your help. My 6.5 year old currently plays minecraft on my old original iPad. Problem is it’s very slow and won’t update to ios10 so we are struggling with updates etc. So for Xmas we’ve decided to buy him a new one. What’s the best device for a soon to be 7 year old... an iPad mini (very expensive), switch, Xbox one (although I feel he’s too young for this even though it’s the cheapest option), kindle? I really have no idea!

He does play other games too like farm simulator and car games and equally loved playing mario kart on our old wii which is why I considered a switch!

Help!!

I would buy an Xbox. There's a new one being released this winter or you could get an Xbox one, if you can find one.

Playstation is by far the best console. The ps5 comes out this winter so you could probably get a good deal on the ps4 for Christmas. Honestly anything else is just wasting money and eventually you will get him a playstation.

We have all of the above and the Xbox gets played the most by DD 7. She loves animal crossing and mario kart on the switch but generally only if she's playing with one of us. On the Xbox she plays Minecraft, Minecraft dungeons with her dad, goat simulator Grin, Disney infinity, Skylanders and Roblox.

Probably biased because I'm an xbox gamer but I'd recommend xbox to anybody. You can pick up an all digital one s pretty cheap nowadays, there are plenty of child friendly games on there and there are parental controls you can set up to monitor what games are being played, screen time etc.

Are you dead set on brand new? We got a pretty decent nearly new iPad from CEX for a good price and you can also trade in old devices as part exchange.

Thanks everyone. I just feel with an Xbox or something because we don’t have anything like that and neither do any of his friends he’d open it and not know what the hell it was! I’m not even sure he’d know what an Xbox or PlayStation was if I asked him Confused No not completely set on brand new!

I think a tablet of some description then. My 7 year old plays Minecraft on his iPad, listens to Audiobooks, reads books on the library app, FaceTimes or texts his grandparents, watches films, does coding app etc.

More flexible and portable for holidays etc.

I had the same situation with my 5 y.o. , I've read a lot of thoughts on how to choose the best game system, found this link very helpful power-tools-for-power-kids.com/best-gaming-system-for-kids-in-2020/, We've chosen a ps3, and my son is absolutely happy with it
