Toughmonkeys There are two types of battles: PvP and trainer. PvP you need friends to battle with; if you’re local it doesn’t matter what your friendship level is. If you’re distance battling (as many on here do), you need to be ultra or best friends to battle.

Trainer battles you can do on your own - it’s you versus a team trainer. To do this, go to Nearby > Battle then pick one of the team trainers. You can only get a reward from this once a day though.
