How do i know which gyms are ex-raid gyms?

DoctorTwo · 28/04/2018 17:48

There is no sure fire way of telling which gyms will get an ex-Raid. To get a pass it's not absolutely necessary to raid a gym, but it does help. For our second Ex-Raid it was at a gym I hadn't raided but had battled. Your best bet is to at least spin every gym you come across, I got a pass for a gym I only spun. I didn't go, as a 140 mile round trip to raid didn't appeal. :o

Iruka Unless you’re part of a local raid group, it will be very hard to find out. While they’re usually in parks, this isn’t guarenteed, and just because a gym is an ex-raid gym it won’t either guarantee a pass (especially if you don’t hit it in the right time or enough people haven’t triggered it), or even an ex-raid.

It’s taken the majority of raid groups a very long time and a lot of work to work out their local ex-raid gyms.

Iruka · 28/04/2018 17:56

I can't find a local raid group. I am sure there is one but no luck making contact 😞. I work shifts so not usually out and about at the usual times

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 28/04/2018 17:58

That’s not true; to get an ex-raid pass you have to have done a raid there (any star). The only exceptions to this are the glitch passes that Niantic admitted were a mistake.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 28/04/2018 18:00

Iruka That’s a shame Sad I think your best bet is to raid frequently at gyms in park areas Saturday through Wednesday.

(However, what Pokemon Go considers a park area differs from what you and I would consider a park area!)

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 28/04/2018 19:13

For anyone interested, this is a great guide on how best to get an ex-raid pass;

Iruka Are you on Facebook? My local area has a very active Pokemon Facebook group where raids are planned. Until I discovered this (and then plucked up courage to join) I had never battled a gym other than level one or two.
Alternatively go to your local town centre on a Saturday and look out for gyms with a level 5 raid. Hang around until you see a group studiously studying their phones and go and ask if you can join them. Most groups should welcome new members as the more people attacking the better.

If you're worried about your age/sex; don't worry, there will almost certainly be some 'older' people and often women - it's not all young men, although they are in the majority.

Iruka · 28/04/2018 19:58

I am in a Facebook group but it covers the whole county and most people seem to be a fair distance away.
There is a local Facebook group but it doesn't appear to be active. I asked to join but no response.
I spotted some likely people on the seafront a couple of Sundays ago but I was working so I couldn't stop
I might need to go and hang around on my next Sunday off

DoctorTwo · 28/04/2018 23:14

When our group all caught Mewtwo it was the first time I had raided that gym. It's still the only time I've raided there. That was right after the last community day, 15th April. As for it being in a park, well, technically it is: it's in a football club car park. :o

So the park bit is a bit of a weird one.

The gym itself doesn't actually have to be in a park. (By Park I mean dark green area on the pogo map) What it actually is, is that the centre point of the cell that the gym is in must fall in a park. So my guess is that the grassy bits of the football club are designated as 'park' and that the centre of the cell the gym is in catches the edge of this area.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 29/04/2018 05:54

DoctorTwo Absolutely every single piece of information Niantic has ever released about ex-raids tells you that apart from the glitch passes, you have to have raided at that gym to get a pass.

They don’t give ex-raid passes of the most desirable and wanted Pokémon out of the franchise’s 20 year history to those who don’t raid (bar glitch passes) as that would be wholly unfair on those that put in the time and effort to do so.

derekthe1adyhamster · 29/04/2018 17:56

I am beyond happy. Just finished the last raid needed for my special assignment, the third pokemon I caught was a wailmer with an excellent curveball!!!!

Eggzandbacon · 29/04/2018 20:59

Still no ditto....

tumpymummy · 30/04/2018 00:15

Lucky you derek I am really struggling to throw an excellent curveball. How is it different to a great or nice curveball? I can throw those but never excellent. I must have tried to catch over 150 Pokemon Inc wailmer and all I get is great curveballs. Even if I throw a normal straight ball I don't get excellent. Any tips?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 30/04/2018 00:31

tumpymummy An excellent throw is closer to the centre of the circle, so the smaller the circle and the more in the centre of it you are the better chance you have of getting an excellent throw.

Google is your friend for tips to find one that works for you, but have a quick look at this guide:

UrgentScurryfunge · 30/04/2018 15:15

Look what I've got Grin

Caught Mewtwo in an ex-raid, then a few of us went for a wander. I'd been caught up on Ditto then the 10 raids on a slow week, but the 50 catches with berries and the excellent curveball (Wailmer) have been quick. I remembered to lucky egg in time too!

Driving along looking for parking space and suddenly screaming in the back of the car. The kids had found a shiny magikarp at long last, so we will have our red Gary!

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 30/04/2018 18:07

Congrats urgent and mini efels

Very jealous of red Gary.

PickAChew · 30/04/2018 20:03

I finally caught a shiny Karp, yesterday, too. CP 24 and truly awful IVs so red Gary can wait a while.

UrgentScurryfunge · 30/04/2018 22:30

I've got 400 magikarp candy. No shiny. I'll hold on for a while in case. I have 3 decent Garys anyway so no urgent need to use it up. I've got back up to 200 Rhyhorn candy too for future use.

soupforbrains · 30/04/2018 22:41

I'm in a sulk as despite this event I haven't managed to bag a shiny Wailmer or a shiny Magikarp.

I feel like I've caught millions of the bloody things. Hmph. 😒

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 30/04/2018 22:50

Me too soup. I started the special research with enough candy to evolve a shiny magikarp, I ended up using it in order to catch mew and Ive caught so many of the blighters I can now evolve another one. No shiny anything for me though Sad

Murinae · 30/04/2018 22:53

I’ve not got a shiny magicarp or wailmer either Angry

BouleBaker · 30/04/2018 23:26

I finally caught my Mew! Final raid at 1 and Mew was mine by 3. Only 77% but lovely all the same.
