Here are the best of Gen III’s Pokemon that are the ones you want to focus on powering up.

I will start by saying that Slacking (first form: Slakoth) is debatable as while it has huge CP its unique moveset means its primary attack doesn’t actually do anything.

• Gardevoir (first form: Ralts) is like a new Alakazam, but it’s not just psychic, it’s fairy/psychic, which means it isn’t weak to dark or bug which is what people bring to fight psychic. It’s only vulnerable to ghost, steel and poison which aren’t the types people have heavy hitters in.

• Aggron (first form: Aron) worth powering up as it’s like Golem but with a better type combination; it’s part steel, which is one of the best defensive types in the game. It also makes it a steel Pokemon that isn’t vulnerable to fire as it’s cancelled out by rock.

• Walrein (first form: Spheal) is like a Gen III Lapras. It can learn double ice to be good against dragon but it can also be double water. It’s good in two type categories that there isn’t a lot of competition in. Spheals are also everywhere and it rains a lot here, so it’s easy to get amazing weather boosted ones.

• Hariyama (first form: Makuhita) is like Machamp mark two but is more defensive and a lot easier to evolve and power up as it only requires 50 to evolve.

• Swampert (first form: Mudkip) is a pretty powerful water Pokemon and there aren’t a lot of those outside of legendaries so that’s worth it.

• Shiftry (first form: Seedot) might be worth powering up but only if you need a good dark Pokemon. It learns double dark moves to get the STAB bonus and it’s weighted towards attack.

All legendaries are of course worth powering up too.

TL;DR: Gardevoir, Aggron, Walrein, Hariyama and Swampert are definitely worth powering up. Shiftry maybe if you need a good dark Pokemon, while Slacking is debatable and I wouldn’t automatically do it just because it has high stats.

I hope this helps Smile

That's so helpful WhatToDo, thanks for that. I've got lots of Mudkip candies but I'm holding out evolving for a really good one, so good to know Swampert is worth the wait.

I got my Mewtwo btw, chuffed to bits with him. I'm going to try to woman up a bit more and go to more group raids.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 25/01/2018 14:10

PikachuHeadgear You’re welcome Smile I have nearly 200 Mudkip candies but my two best are 76% Lv 34 and 80% Lv 31.

Both IVs are far too low (and Lv 31 too low too) but the Level 34 one is tempting simply because the level is so high. I’m gonna keep waiting and hope for a 90%+ Lv 34 one Grin

Congrats on your Mewtwo as well! Smile

PikachuHeadgear · 25/01/2018 14:36

Yes, stardust is so precious that the elusive high IV/high level combination is worth holding out for if it's a pokemon that's useful enough to consider powering up.

My Mewtwo was weather boosted Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 25/01/2018 14:53

Yeah that’s it, by powering up higher level ones you do save on stardust so it can be worth going for a slightly lower CP but higher levelled one. It really can be very complex!

Ooh congrats Grin A weather boosted Mewtwo is amazing!

Murinae · 25/01/2018 16:41

Just checked my swamped and leafy thing are both good but my gardavoir is a bit rubbish

Murinae While your Swampert is a brilliant IV percentage it is unfortunately an exceptionally low level at only 15.

My Level 34 Mudkip if I evolved it would come out at 2488, but it’s only 74% so I’m waiting.

I think it’s the same with your Shiftry too; while it might be a good percentage I think it’s a low level as its CP is very low; if I evolved mine at Level 29 it would come out at about 1800, which would still be too low for me so I’m hanging on for over Level 30 at least.

Your Gardevoir, however, while it might be a low IV is a high level, hence the CP.

A lot of the time you do have to weigh up the IV vs CP; don’t always go with the highest of one or the other.

I would also never advise anyone to evolve a Pokemon under Level 20, as Level 20 really is the minimum a Pokemon should be before it’s evolved.

I’m not trying to tell you or anyone how to play, by the way, please don’t feel that Smile Just trying to offer advice for those who are interested in getting the best out of their Pokemon.

Murinae · 25/01/2018 17:20

No I’m grateful for your help. I have 157 mudkip candies and there are loads of mudkip around where I work so I’m not too worried about it’s level. I’ve not decided whether or not to power it up yet. At least it is potential!

Murinae · 25/01/2018 17:21

Has potential!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 25/01/2018 17:31

Murinae Yeah, that’s the thing; despite being a starter there aren’t too uncommon (although whether they may become so in the future remains to be seen as I haven’t seen a wild Squirtle or Totodile in a very long time despite living in an area with high water spawns) Smile

I would advise against powering up that particular Swampert as it will take a very lot of stardust; I wouldn’t be surprised if it was well over 100k due to the low level.

PikachuHeadgear · 26/01/2018 00:40

Hmmm I have an 80% level 32 Mudkip. Tempting, but patience is such a virtue in this game Halo

I'm keeping it though, just in case ...

PickAChew · 26/01/2018 18:33

I've got loads of mudkip candy but no high level mudkip with better than average IV. Frustrating. Still, by the time I find one, I'll have kissed enough frogs to be able to do some powering up.

Apart from whismur and a handful of Aron I've not had much luck with the new spawns, until this darling appeared in my garage, just now. Only "decent" but I don't care!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 26/01/2018 19:21

PickAChew Yeah, Lunatone is really just a novelty Pokemon so there’s no need for it to be awesome Smile

PickAChew · 26/01/2018 19:42

Talking of novelties, ds1 has just caught himself a nosepass in the town centre.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 27/01/2018 17:22

Just did my first raid and caught a Mawile! Very low cp but got some golden raspberries too!

RueDeWakening · 27/01/2018 17:25

I want a Mawile, not even seen a raid for one myself, though I know others nearby have got them.

I took DD and DS1 to the park where I got my EX pass this afternoon to raid a Porygon - neither of them had one, and hopefully it'll trigger another EX raid there and DS will get a chance at Mewtwo - he's only level 16, so it might not happen but still.

Murinae · 27/01/2018 17:58

I’ve been in Lisbon all weekend and caught new Pokemon that I’ve never seen before. I finally hatched a feebas too and caught loads of Aron and Numad

Does anyone have a guide of what's available now and how many candy to evolve? I'm getting all confused with these new ones.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 27/01/2018 20:48

KadabrasSpoon Hope this helps Smile

Murinae · 27/01/2018 22:43

I just evolved this crowdaunt. After our evening walk along the river in Lisbon I have enough Numad now to evolve too but no good ones. Should I wait or doesn’t it matter since it’s not a great Pokemon anyway?

Murinae · 27/01/2018 22:45

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 thanks for that article I found it very interesting and useful.

KadabrasSpoon · 28/01/2018 00:09

Thank you very much
I have a spreadsheet of what I need to get and how far it is to walk etc. I might be over invested in this game Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/01/2018 01:00

Murinae You’re welcome Smile Nice Crawdaunt! Camerupt (Numel’s Evolution) isn’t the greatest Pokemon; its stats are weak, but it does have good type coverage so could be used as a back up to tackle a grass/steel/bug or ice raid boss.

However, in the future it does have a pretty good Mega Evolution where its attack is pretty powerful and its defence is quite heavy (speed does take a hit here though), so I would definitely make sure you have lots of candies and a high CP, high IV one for then.

So I would personally wait and try and collect as many as you possibly can both for the candies and to find a great one.

KadabrasSpoon You’re welcome Smile And I don’t think it’s possible to be too over invested WinkGrin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/01/2018 18:09

Look what I caught! A 93% shiny Magikarp! How lucky is that?! Grin
