Is anybody else looking forward to playing Breath of the Wild on Friday? I haven't looked on youtube as I don't want to spoil it by watching someone else playing it first.
I have warmed up by playing A Link Between Worlds but finished that earlier than expected.

I've never played the Zelda games but the new one looks awesome. Can anyone recommend a Zelda game to start off with?

JigglyTuff · 09/03/2017 18:26

The Windwaker is a nice starter Zelda game I think. You have a little boat and sail about.

Ashvis - I got the Sheika Slate + which is really handy for finding specific plants etc. I also got the bomb upgrade. I need more ancient things for the other ones.

DS has been battling the major test of strength for ages and failed. It's really, really hard! I haven't even tried - I'm hopeless Blush

Ashvis · 09/03/2017 19:07

Which platform would you be looking to use Niffler? I know you can get most games to download now, but some of the handheld Zelda games are great too. Minish Cap is woefully underrated, and the most recent one, Link Between Worlds, was very well done too.

Yy to Windwaker. It's a fantastic game. Accessible, stunning to look at, the controls are good, great combat and puzzle solving, the boat is just super fun. It's all lovely. Ocarina of Time is wonderful too. I'd try looking up Twitch or YouTube and see if you can watch people playing different ones - one might appeal more than the others.

Jiggly, those are the upgrades I have too. The upgraded bomb is awesome. Haven't found any ancient cores though. I'm envious of you sharing the game with your ds - mine is only 5 and not able to manage yet. He did enjoy watching Epona gallop about earlier though, was reading through my BOTW guide, and plays with the couple of Link toys we have, so there's hope. He really likes watching Windwaker. Especially the bit where Link gets shot out of a cannon. That bit is awesome, beautifully directed!

Nifflerbowtruckle · 09/03/2017 20:19

Ashvis we have a 3ds and the Zelda game looks so good I may end up getting a Nintendo switch Grin. We also have a wii.

JigglyTuff · 09/03/2017 20:21

It's lovely now he's old enough to play properly (he's 10). I used to let him play in Link's village in Twilight Princess and he accidentally deleted my save file ShockShockShockEnvyEnvyEnvyEnvy

Ashvis · 09/03/2017 20:45

Twilight Princess is a very good game too, but it does get bloody hard. I loved it though, and it was a big reason for me getting a Wii on launch! I got a free copy of Windwaker with my copy of Twilight Princess so I was very torn over what to play. It was Zeldatastic though. Definitely recommend the two handheld Zelda games I mentioned, especially Link Between Worlds. I know a lot of people have said it, but I'd argue that BOTW is, so far, the best game ever. For me, it feels like a Zelda game, but with elements of Skyrim, Witcher, two of my other most fave games. The puzzle elements are often reminiscent of Portal too (I never really played that, but dh loved that game). I'm just happy when I play it. Definitely worth getting a Switch for.

So hopefully 5 years till ds might be able to play, eh? Whenever he is around and I'm playing I have to read out all the speech - he reads very well but not as quickly as he'd like to. And I do better voices 😊 Never thought of letting ds have a play in Link's village (or island in WW). He is just now enjoying pressing buttons and seeing the effect they have on the characters, but we have a friend whose ds is amazing at gaming and only a year older than mine. That kid has finished all the levels in several Lego games now! Future professional gamer I reckon.

Ashvis · 09/03/2017 20:46

And you didn't disown your ds, Jiggly, for deleting your save file?! That's true motherly devotion! 😜

JigglyTuff · 09/03/2017 21:08

I was tempted, believe me! GrinGrin

He completed the Windwaker last year. He's much better at defeating boosts than I am - I get in a bit of tizzy. Perhaps you could let your DS wander around Kalariko and catch cuccos? Grin

I've never played Skyrim etc but the space to explore in BOTW is just remarkable. I love that it can be played at so many different levels. It's been worth the wait.

Xexyz · 09/03/2017 23:15

My, this game is pretty amazing isn't it?

JigglyTuff · 10/03/2017 08:09

boosts = bosses
kalariko = kakariko

ipad predictive text + no glasses = fail!

MrsGWay · 10/03/2017 10:27

I agree A Link Between Worlds is a good one to start as I think it is one of the easier ones. I have a soft spot for the 2d ones as Link's Awakening was the first Zelda game I played. Despite only really gaming in the last year after a 10 year hiatus I still managed to play the Zelda games when they came out.

I actually made progress yesterday and met my first boss. Quickly warped away to get more supplies!

Jiggly I am impressed by your restraint, I think if anybody deleted my save files I would be in prison. I could do with someone battling for me now tho!

JigglyTuff · 10/03/2017 14:14

@MrsGWay - I love A Link Between Worlds but isn't it only on the 3DS?

First boss! I'm still noodling as my battling skills are rubbish and I really need to improve them before I go any further.

I found a diamond yesterday though (worth 500 rupees) so I can buy my house now Grin

I'm glad people appreciate the heinousness of the deletion crime. It's forgiven (just) but not forgotten, don't worry Wink

Ashvis · 10/03/2017 17:37

I've just arrived at the Zora Domain (took a detour with my wolf to get the Woodland Tower cause it was there and why not), but think I've collected enough gems and stuff to be able to afford my house. My house! It's so exciting!

A 10 year hiatus?! That's a long time! Loads of games to discover then!

And yeah, Link Between Worlds is a 3ds game, but Niffler has one - different kind of gameplay, but lovely intro to the kids of world and puzzles you'll come across. Windwaker would still be my first choice for an intro game though!

Know what else I love? Dh and I both had completely different ways of getting into the shrine next to the first stables, hadn't considered the other's way (I glided in, he created a pillar of ice to climb then jump down), but have both thought of other ways to get there since. No one right way to complete some of the puzzles. Love it.

Ashvis · 11/03/2017 07:42

Kids = kinds. Can't blame no glasses, just general exhaustion caused by small child. Hoping he makes up for it in a few years by killing bosses in games for me. Else I shall exact revenge by hoovering outside his room in the middle of the night.

MrsGWay · 11/03/2017 10:44

I have been catching up as we got a Wii U about 18 months ago and a PS4 last christmas. The (Darth Vader) PS4 is mostly a dust collector but the Wii U has been used loads.
I really want to replay Wind Waker now as I played and loved it on the Game Cube. Should I get my GameCube out or rebuy for the Wii U? Is it even more beautiful? I rebought most of the others from the eshop. My Gameboy Color d pad isn't great anymore.

OP posts:
Ashvis · 11/03/2017 11:37

I thought Windwaker was more beautiful on the WiiU. And it had the inclusion of the Tingle bottles - when you're sailing about, you can pick up messages in bottles that other gamers have posted. I read one where the guy was proclaiming to the world he is going to be a dad. In another a kid was coming out. Mostly it's to do with the game, lots of funny observations, but I never read a Tingle Bottle I didn't like. Oh, and you don't need to get a firefly for coloured photos. That bit was a pest before.

JigglyTuff · 11/03/2017 11:45

Oh maybe I'll buy the Windwaker for the WiiU then! Our Wii seems to have died (according to DS - not actually examined it) and I would actually quite like to play it again.

And maybe finish Twilight Princess ... (I was in that temple with the giant hand when DS had his 'accident' and just couldn't face starting the game all over again!)

Ashvis · 11/03/2017 11:49

The giant hand bit is as far as I got in TP! It was getting close to the game and I couldn't bear the thought it was over so I stopped playing. Silly, I know, and I have finished loads of games, inc Windwaker, but TP was gorgeous. I liked the wolf 😊 That was far in to lose the game. I'm admiring your restraint even more now!!

JigglyTuff · 11/03/2017 11:58

Not silly at all! I liked the wolf too. I'm going to name a horse Midna in botw I think :)

Ashvis · 11/03/2017 12:04

Midna 😁 Best companion in a Zelda game ever.

MrsGWay · 15/03/2017 10:14

How is everyone getting on, I have focused on the main quest and have managed to tame three of the beasts. Just trying to get to the one on death mountain.
I also have the master sword!
I wish they had found a better voice actor for Zelda if they wanted her to have a English accent they should've hired an English person.

OP posts:
Ashvis · 15/03/2017 13:35

Wow, MrsG, you're doing brilliantly! I'm most impressed. Not a bit jealous you have the master sword, no siree, not me, nope. I've been wandering about exploring a lot - found the master sword but don't have enough hearts yet. I was about to start my first divine beast but just realised I have 4 spirit orbs so, despite standing right next to the prince, I'm going to warp away and get another heart before starting it! I'll be up to 8, but only 2 stamina upgrades. Once I get the master sword though, I'll concentrate on the stamina a bit more. I found the Akkala ancient tech lab, had a good wander round near Death Mountain and died trying to do the Major Test of Strength shrine. Did not complete it 😬

Yy to better voice actors, but why don't they have one for Link? Don't get me wrong, I like that he doesn't have a voice actor, but why doesn't he have one? Is it just me that thinks Princess Zelda is a bit whiney?

Missswatch · 15/03/2017 19:29

Not bad. Four guardians and ready for Ganon but I don't want to complete the game yet. Trying to do side quests

Came across the red dragon for the spring of power quest. Was incredible

Ashvis · 16/03/2017 07:19

Gosh, I feel like a total slacker now! Although I have heard some people have done a speed run to complete the main quest - basically going straight to kill Ganon from the outset, no guardians first, and done it in about 50 odd minutes. It's an impressive accomplishment, but if I'd been able to do that (I am definitely not remotely able to do that!) I'm not sure I'd have the motivation to go back and complete all the side quests. I enjoy the journey too much I think! It's just so pretty, l like running about with my wolf running just seeing what's around the corner.

Oh, the Spring of Power, that bit was amazing. I loved that quest, really exciting. The dragon, its movements, just gorgeous. The mechanics for completing that one are fantastic. I'm currently looking for a Goron whose name ends in "son". And off to photograph a lynel. Or maybe the first guardian. Too many choices.

MrsGWay · 18/03/2017 11:58

I have now made one foray into the castle, but my parry skills need honing. I'm quite conflicted as I'd like to see the ending but am not ready for the game to end. From the few comments here it's obvious I have many things to complete, I've seen dragons but haven't come across quests involving them. I'm also spending time looking for the black horse I couldn't tame when I got through Duelling Peaks.

Although I've been avoiding spoilers I watched parts of the speedrun and it is madness. Link doesn't even have time to get dressed! Plus it uses a glitch that I can't manage to do. These players are very skilled!

For anyone interested Windwaker HD is only £14 at Tesco. I've ordered it, saves finding and setting the Gamecube up.
