I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

I think the station thing in TTR is that you are claiming a route, rather than a particular station? That was my argument anyway :o

When we have game nights with DSCs we tend to just take turns in choosing the main game. Later this month we will hopefully have one for DH's birthday, so it'll obviously be his choice, but after that we might have a rota or something. There are 8 of us (6 when DCs go to bed).

I need to figure out when we can have more game nights, was thinking once a month but thinking of it as only 12 times in a whole year seems ridiculous :( would love to do fortnightly but not sure my DSCs have enough opportunity to all be here at the same time! Curse them growing up and having lives of their own, the buggers :o :o

Thanks for the info about Jaipur :)

Short game for 6yo - Sleeping Queens, Uno. Labyrinth and Indigo are great if they have good spatial awareness, that's my DS' strength so they are two favourites of his :)

I was hoping to have time to play Forbidden Island but we need to tidy up instead. Sulking.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 16:42

IsItMeOr then just take out some of the tougher guys and put no boss monster in. Pretty much guaranteed to win!

IsItMeOr · 11/01/2016 18:59

Thanks fuzzpig we have Labyrinth (and the similar Lego Hogwarts game) which DS enjoys. We do let him look at more things at once, so that it's a bit easier for him - initially we let him look at all of his cards, now we've reduced it to some of them, but still more than us.

001 I hadn't thought of doing that! Will have to persuade DH to play it with me one night, so that we can figure it out.

We also have Jamaica in the cupboard, as we thought DS would like the pirate theme (and the box is a thing of beauty...).

crankyagnes · 11/01/2016 19:00

Thanks Wolfcub, I think we'd like that one - another for the list!

00100001 · 12/01/2016 10:46

If anyone wants to join me - I play Dominion Online :)

Can PM you my username

00100001 · 12/01/2016 10:49

ooooh Jamica is great!

You could play your hands play to give him more of a chance :) And then things like fights etc are random :)

Pumpkinmoon · 12/01/2016 11:01

Camel Upwas by far the best game we played this Christmas. Fairly simple to learn and play but really good fun and over in under half an hour so a great after dinner game. DC's are 10, 11 and 14 and this is the only game teen DS has ever actually asked to play! Lots of laughs and the quality amazing. Love the wooden camels that stack up on each other's "humps" too!

crankyagnes · 12/01/2016 13:45

Yes, we really enjoyed Camel Up too. I think it's the added gambling element of guessing which camel will win each leg and win/lose overall that lifts it up from being a straight forward board game race. And funny, like you say, when they all stack up! My dn is 13 and ds1 is 12 and they both really got into it.

We like Munchkin too. I think DS1 enjoys weighing in to help the monsters defeat his opponents as much as he does winning against them himself. And who doesn't like a game that can see you armed with the Boots of Buttkicking or a Really Impressive Title Grin

fuzzpig · 12/01/2016 15:23

I could quite do with the boots of buttkicking IRL I reckon :o Munchkin does sound good anyway.

I've agreed to go to a home ed meet up in the next town next week. Is it wrong that I mainly said yes because it gives us an excuse to go to the game shop there? Blush :o

I'll be taking our duplicate board game presents to see if I can swap them. Want to have an idea of what we would like to buy instead but one of the two was a family present so I don't want to make the decision myself although I clearly have much better taste than DH and the DCs - if they allow us to exchange, it'll give us about £30 credit but I'd be happy to spend more than that.

Wolfcub · 12/01/2016 16:29

Love Camel Up. We have the expansion as well although we've only played one of the expansion options. I love it when the "wrong" camel wins and upsets the ticket

fuzzpig · 12/01/2016 16:51

I just looked up Seven Dragons and the cards look quite similar to that of Aquarius, wonder if it's the same concept? It's by the same people (looney labs)

I'm quite intrigued by Camel Up. It's one that has been on my wishlist because of seeing recommendations but I've not looked into it properly.

00100001 · 12/01/2016 16:59

Looney Labs do lots of good education-in-disguise games :) Zeus on the Loose is another good one they do :)

00100001 · 12/01/2016 17:00

and yes Seven Dragons looks to be the same game as Aquarius :)

fuzzpig · 12/01/2016 17:02

We have Zeus on the Loose! Double whammy for us, as DCs love Greek mythology too. :o I'm really excited about Aquarius, hasn't arrived yet but needless to say I'll update when we've played it.

Also has anyone played Ingenious please?

fuzzpig · 13/01/2016 00:21

Also... any Rummikub fans... the dice version is currently under £2.50 on Amazon. :o

TaintedAngel · 13/01/2016 00:30

My dp and I get friends round regularly for a takeaway, drink and games night. We love game of thrones monopoly, taboo, and family trivial pursuit. Also have some pub quiz card games and cards against humanity too.

Love a games night.

crankyagnes · 13/01/2016 07:40

Munchkin has reminded me, does anyone else watch youtube tutorials to understand how to play their new games? We found the Munchkin instructions SO much clearer once we'd learnt the basics of how to play!

I think this is because sadly IRL we don't know any other board gamers to recommend games to us and show us how to play them. My niece and nephew are happy to join in with our new games when they're visiting, but I end up getting ideas for new games from say Amazon reviews - or these threads Grin

frenchfancy · 13/01/2016 10:39

Yes crankyagnes we look up youtube videos to work out new games. It was in valuable for 7 wonders, Puerto Rico and Village.

00100001 · 13/01/2016 10:47

I definitely needed it for some games like Warhammer Invasion - the rules just don't make it clear. At all.

00100001 · 13/01/2016 11:01

and also Munchkin the rules are TERRIBLE

crankyagnes · 13/01/2016 12:23

Glad it's not just me then! Chillywhippet's photo of Lords of Deepwater and all it's pieces makes me think I'll be on youtube again for that, when I can persuade DH to get it.

Can anyone recommend any more games that are specifically for 2 players? DS1 likes chess but I don't, so I want something else to distract him with. We have Battleline and Jaipur at the moment.

vikjul · 13/01/2016 12:58

fuzzpig Casino is a fun and simple card game with a normal deck of cards. Should work for a 6yo and an 8yo although the 6yo might need some help adding their cards.

crankyagnes We play 2-player games often and also have Battleline and Jaipur (and I don't like chess either.) We LOVE Splendor as a 2-player game (it plays up to 4 but we prefer it with 2). We have just received Agricola All Creatures Big and Small which is supposed to be great, but haven't tried it yet. It is supposedly more strategic than tactical though and with no luck at all, so might not be a good fit if you don't like chess.

Other 2-player games I am thinking about getting are Patchwork and Funghi (also called Morels); both are supposed to be very good. Oh, and Othello is fun!

ohdearlord · 13/01/2016 13:25

We're playing Camel Cup (a lot) at the moment. DP is a maths professor which DD thinks should mean he's not allowed to play Grin

Otherwise Machi Koro with the expansions.

00100001 · 13/01/2016 13:48

Out of interest - if anyone is in South Herts/North London. I run a board games club in Potters Bar.

fuzzpig · 13/01/2016 14:13

Wish I was nearer! I'm in Sussex... there was a thread a little while ago about maybe setting up meets for MN board game sessions.
