I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

Oooh, I played the UK map of TtR on Tuesday - it was great :)

crankyagnes · 10/01/2016 08:40

Can I join? Thanks to fuzzpig's what board games are you getting for Christmas thread we got lots of games this year Smile

I mostly play with ds1, who is 12 and both competitive and switched on when it comes to games - he likes to win Grin. DH will join in sometimes, but he's not as competitive, so it's not as much fun beating him when he doesn't put up much of a fight!

Our new 2 player games are Jaipur and Battleline. I enjoyed Jaipur more to start with, the pieces and cards are lovely and the game is easy to learn and fun to play. Battleline is growing on me as I get the hang of it, but I've yet to beat ds1 more than one in three games.

We've all enjoyed Camel Up, and it was a big hit when my niece and nephew joined us over New Year. They also enjoyed Exploding Kittens - which for some reason my dm calls Murdering Kittens, so that's what we call it now Grin. Lots of laughing during both those games, despite the competition to win.

And (I feel like I've typed an essay here, sorry) I've got my eye on Bohnanza and Lords of Waterdeep next.

fuzzpig · 10/01/2016 10:19

Phantom Society arrived! Not tried it yet but it looks fine for the DCs which is a bonus. Basically like a board game version of hide and seek.

I also ordered Aquarius which I've had my eye on for ages, and it suddenly dropped in price.

Haven't had a chance to go to the game shop yet, to try and swap the duplicate presents we got, not sure what we will get if they let us swap.

Need to play Forbidden Island with the DCs so we can do the thank you card too.

SeekretSquirrels · 10/01/2016 10:53

After years of playing the US TTR I bought the Europe one over Christmas. It's subtlety different and as someone up thread commented, different strategies win. The personal stations make it much harder for ruthless blockers .
We now have a spreadsheet of scores......

fuzzpig · 10/01/2016 11:25

I keep a record of scores in Hanabi.

The TTR stations - are you supposed to put them on the actual station circles, or do they go over an existing train on the line you need, IYSWIM? As I thought the latter made more sense so it's clearer what line you are borrowing.

AppleAndBlackberry · 10/01/2016 11:32

We're enjoying Agricola at the moment. Carcassonne is a longstanding favourite, might get the prehistoric version for DD2 for her birthday.

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 10/01/2016 13:30

Played a bit more Jaipur but I am yet to win, not sure if I am completely rubbish at it or just unlucky!
DH and I had a good game of Hanabi after though which made me feel a bit better - perfect score :)

Need to get some friends over for a games night but we're about to have some work done on our house so might be a bit tricky, keep saying I will do a family games afternoon one weekend with friends but haven't got around to it yet! Birthday coming up at the beginning of March so that might be a good excuse.

fuzzpig · 10/01/2016 14:40

Do you think Jaipur would work with the DCs joining us on teams? :)

I've never tried Hanabi with 2 players.

Hoping our next game night will be around DH's birthday in a couple of weeks, if DSCs are all free. :)

SeekretSquirrels · 10/01/2016 16:42

We are new to the stations but our method is that you put it on the city in question and you can borrow one route out of that city. I like theidea of straddling the route but you'd have to be clear which city they were at?

I have found I can annoy the DC immensely by calling the stations "hotels". All adds to the pleasure Grin.

Wolfcub · 10/01/2016 19:35

We've played Marvel Legendary, Splendour and Small world this weekend,we are a bit addicted to Splendour. Dh and I played Jaipur earlier in the week

OhforGodsake · 10/01/2016 19:39

We've just got Rumikub this Christmas and it's a great game for adults. Recommend it.

crankyagnes · 11/01/2016 09:51

I think you could play Jaipur with your children Fuzzpig - you build up cards in your hand to exchange for treasures, which give you your points, and they could help you choose which ones to go for. Or, if they are like my ds, take over all choices, leaving you there just to hold the cards for him Grin

Is Splendour like Jaipur, Wolfcub? The descriptions sounded similar.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 10:18

I@m (hopefully) going to be playing T.I.M.E Stories tomorrow

Trickytricky · 11/01/2016 10:27

Played Ticket to Ride for the first time recently and it was great. Also really enjoyed Camel Up which also had never played before.
Our go-to game is always Settlers of Catan.

frenchfancy · 11/01/2016 10:54

We played Settlers of Catan yesterday. We hadn't played it for ages, I'd forgotten how good it was.

How do you chose which game to play? Sunday afternoon games are picked out of a hat. We each get to chose one game to put in the hat - it is written out 5 times, then we each pick out of the hat. The game with the most picks gets played. The following Sunday that game isn't allowed in the hat.

There was always complaints before we started doing this, there was always one that didn't want to play, now everyone accepts the decision of the hat and we all play.

ohforgodsake Rumikub is a great game, but not just for adults, ours have been playing it since they were about 6.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 10:56

Yeah, I play Rummikub with kids too - they normally destroy adults!

IsItMeOr · 11/01/2016 15:33

Thanks for the Love Letter tip. I've just ordered the Munchkins version to play with 6yo DS. Looks like something he will enjoy.

Are there any other 5-10 minute 2-player games you'd recommend for a bright 6yo? He's played and enjoyed Forbidden Island and Rumikub as an indicator of level he can manage.

He has ASD, and we need a number of short activities to help manage our daily routine - so something engaging, but with a natural end (also helps if we can manipulate the play a little to increase his chances of winning...).

Whoowasit went down well a couple of Christmases ago, a sort of co-op junior cluedo, with beautiful artwork and a magic box that gives you clues. Still comes out occasionally.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 15:35

Coloretto :)

00100001 · 11/01/2016 15:36

It's a set collection game, and will help with his maths.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 15:38

The scoring would.

00100001 · 11/01/2016 15:38

Also:
Seven Dragons is good.
Loot

00100001 · 11/01/2016 15:40

If he likes Forbidden Island, he'd like:
Forbidden Desert
Flash Point Fire Rescue
Castle Panic

all good co-ops :)

IsItMeOr · 11/01/2016 15:43

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

We have Castle Panic in the cupboard, but DS struggles with tension, so we didn't think he could cope with the baddies winning yet...Grin.

Wolfcub · 11/01/2016 16:13

cranky splendour is a little bit like Jaipur the aim is to get 15 points and you have to buy cards using a combination of coins and other jewels which you can buy. There are bonus cards for sets which can help.you reach your points. I really enjoyed it and the games develop slightly differently each time.
