I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

So that's an expansion rather than a separate game, how does it work please? :)

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 14:39

And yes I agree about the expansions adding a new lease of life :)

00100001 · 03/01/2016 14:54

Pandemic Legacy and it's AMAZING

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 03/01/2016 16:11

We played a couple of games of Castles of Mad King Ludwig and it's great! I really like it :)

cons: takes a while, quite a bit to learn so can be a bit slow when people are getting to grips with it, you need quite a bit of space to play!
pros: not much nastiness (really don't like games where you have to be very mean to win), different to other games we have and most important great fun even if you don't win! You get to build a cool castle :) And as people have hidden objectives as well as the ones everyone is working towards you don't know who has won until the end :)

Now I hope that I can find some other people who like playing it as much as I do, I think my FiL was quite keen to keep it (he won) and DH wasn't so keen (we did make him play without fully explaining the rules!) but hopefully I can win him over.

We also played Sleeping Queens and Love Letter with my in-laws and they liked both of them, great little filler games.

dementedma · 03/01/2016 16:16

We got Carcassonne three years ago and still haven't figured out how to play it! Used to play board games when kids were small but just can't get into them these days.
We did enjoy a few rounds of Linkee over Christmas but its not technically a board game as such.

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 16:30

Grouching would you say the Castles game would be ok for a 9 and 7yo?

We haven't played Carcassonne for ages since the pieces went missing thanks to the DCs Blush

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 03/01/2016 16:59

A 9 year old who is into games yes probably, not sure about 7 (it says 12+ on the box). My 10 yo was very interested in reading the rules and explaining to everyone how to play and he helped my MiL out a bit but wasn't to into playing himself (takes quite a while and too much other stuff going on) - I think he probably will want to play in the future maybe when he has observed a few more games. My 7yo wasn't really interested but then she isn't so into games. Boardgamegeek says 10+ and I think I probably agree with that, you all take turns at being the master builder and setting prices for rooms and it does take a while to play.

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 17:34

I think the length might be a problem. It's my youngest who generally has more staying power, and is more strategic, but perhaps it'd be the kind of game where they'd be on a team with me or DH and then wander off :o thanks for explaining. Will seek something else as the family game.

DSS is coming over tomorrow - mainly for uni revision, but he's sleeping over so we should have time to play a game too. Hopefully Castle Panic!

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 17:36

Also DS has informed me that he really liked playing with the little set of cards he got in a cracker the other day. I've no idea what he was actually playing as I was busy with a jigsaw :o

Any recommendations for a first, very simple card game for DCs 8 and 6 please? :)

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 17:36

(He does play solitaire on mum's tablet Hmm but would like a game for 2+ players.)

frenchfancy · 03/01/2016 19:18

fuzzpig the Asia expansion has a new board and new route cards but uses the trains and train cards from the original set.

Do your DCs play Uno? I think it is one of the best introductory card games.

demented watch a YouTube video (m.youtube.com/watch?v=kakQvPIKyPY) for a play through ofCarcassonne. Its a good little puzzle ish game and easy to learn

BoboChic · 03/01/2016 20:18

Pandemic

myrtleWilson · 03/01/2016 20:19

0100001 how are you getting on with Pandemic Legacy... We are at January game 1 and will have to replay!

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 20:50

Yes they love Uno :) we have a few different card games like that but haven't played any that use a normal deck of cards IYSWIM. Knew lots myself when I was a kid but can't remember any now!

fuzzpig · 03/01/2016 20:51

And thanks for the info re: TTR

BertieBotts · 03/01/2016 21:08

We got Monopoly Empire for Christmas which is a bit odd but much faster than the normal game. DS loves it. I am a bit sceptical. I think it will date horribly, with the branding, and I find that some factors are way simplified. But DS (7) loves it and it's fun enough to play a family game which doesn't take forever and doesn't get too repetitive.

00100001 · 03/01/2016 21:52

Just finished February Smile

Wolfcub · 04/01/2016 09:39

We've played loads of Splendour over the last few days, it's just so easy and so frustrating when you come close to winning that you want to play again

fuzzpig · 05/01/2016 12:13

My DSD has that Monopoly Empire. It's just about the only Monopoly game I'm willing to play, I hate the regular one (we do have the express dice version which is cool but have lost some pieces)

fuzzpig · 05/01/2016 12:18

Yesterday DSS was here so we played Castle Panic. Really liked it! We lost, but we hadn't realised you could discard and pick a new card every turn if you wanted, so I think we'd have been better if we'd done that. DS really liked it but DD kept wandering off.

We also played TTR, first time we've played with less than 4 so not being able to use the double tracks threw us a bit.

And we finally tried Gormenghast which has been sitting in the cupboard unused for a really long time. Oh good grief it is INSANELY complicated. We nearly gave up before we really started, but persevered for a little while and agreed to play first to 3VP instead of 9. I have a feeling it'll be hard to persuade anyone to play again with me which is a shame as I think it's one of those games you have to play a good few times to get to grips with.

In other news, I've still got some Christmas money that is burning a hole in my pocket. Some of the things I was going to buy with it aren't available ATM so I may well use more on games! Unfortunately I'm not going to the nearby town for a while, or I'd just turn up with the cash and ask the lovely, knowledgable guys there to tell me what to buy with it :o

feetheart · 05/01/2016 12:36

Favourite game over Christmas was Star Wars Labyrinth
Favourite card game was Hobbit Love Letter.

Both were MN recommendations

We also played a lot of Quirkle, Bananagrams and have resurrected Rapidough which was a HUGE success yesterday :o

Taking notes as DH is a HUGE gamer (and has trained us all well :)) and he has a big birthday next month.

Wolfcub · 05/01/2016 15:20

I've organised our games cupboards today - decided to devote the sideboard to the purpose. Unfortunately we aren't even close to fitting all the games in but it does mean more are downstairs which is where we play. Hopefully that will equal more game playing and less mindless screen time

00100001 · 06/01/2016 12:11

More boardgames is never a bad thing!

JustCasualComments · 07/01/2016 11:06
