I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

Ooh haven't heard of that, will look it up.

I've got loads of new games recently, I'd saved up some of my spends money and had an ebay splurge. Loving Patchwork especially.

Cagliostro · 23/02/2017 17:42

I meant rock paper wizard sorry as I missed the last post!

Fab glad you liked ticket to ride! We've just got back into carcassonne as well :)

crankyagnes · 25/02/2017 13:33

Popping back in to say that we've been playing Port Royal and Splendour non-stop this half term and both were recommended by someone (vijkul?) on this thread so big thanks Smile I'm the current champion at Port Royal, ds1 at Splendour.

Also been playing a few games of Lords of Waterdeep, been enjoying that too. Honours are about even on that one, so far!

Thevelveteenrabbit · 25/02/2017 13:49

Currently liking Dream Home although only plays up to 4 - and Fabled Fruit - lovely art work and game mechanism clever in that you have different starting cards each game so have to rethink tactics!!

NotCitrus · 25/02/2017 14:04

Got Mad King Ludwig for Christmas and it's good once you get past the rules being written really densely. Making mad castle layouts is a lot of fun. Can be played as solitaire too.

frenchfancy · 25/02/2017 14:28

Nice to have some more board games chat.

We've been playing a lot this week. We got Splendor, Pandemic and Camel Up for Christmas which are all great. Splendor is only 4 players but if you reduce the number of gems in hand to 7 (rather than 10) then you can play with 5. Camel up can be played with up to 8 players and is good fun.

We went to the game shop yesterday and got Legendary Inventors. We've ony played one round so far but we all enjoyed it. I like games with a historical/education element to them. This one has a bunch of invenotrs, most of them are well known - Maire Curé, Eddison, Archimedes but some are less well known like Ada Lovelace and Hildegard Von Bingen. The game comes with a leaflet telling you who they are and what they did.

Cagliostro · 25/02/2017 14:36

Oooh I was just looking at that inventors one! Cool!

The one I'm currently lusting after is called Kanagawa, it's by Iello and it looks absolutely beautiful. I love anything Japan themed (in fact I'm running a games table at a small Japancon next month) and I love the art of Hokusai which inspired the game.

crankyagnes · 25/02/2017 15:33

I've been tempted by the Mad King Ludwig castles game - would you say it's good for 2, sometimes 3 players?

NotCitrus · 25/02/2017 20:24

agnes Definitely! That's why it was chosen for us.

crankyagnes · 26/02/2017 07:14

That's good to hear, thanks NotCitrus - time to start dropping hints in time for Mother's Day!

Cagliostro · 26/02/2017 09:42

That Ludwig game looks so good Envy :o

I'm liking the look of World Monuments by Queen Games, it reminds me of Lego building which we are all obsessed with in this house!

I fell into eBay last night and bought a cheap used copy of Loot, which is the last Gamewright game I've been really wanting. Keep hearing great things about it. I also recently got Bohnanza which I'm looking forward to trying as I first played it years ago with friends, in fact it was (after Catan) one of the earliest 'modern' games I played

crankyagnes · 26/02/2017 18:48

Our first 'modern' game was Carcassonne, in early 2015 - we borrowed it from our NDN and haven't looked back since then. These games are a world away from Monopoly, aren't they? Which reminds me, has anyone seen the Actualol youtube video about why he hates Monopoly? I couldn't agree with him more!

Cagliostro · 26/02/2017 19:09

Totally agree (although haven't seen the video yet) there is SO much more to board games now. My heart sinks at the thought of playing any roll and move type game

NotCitrus · 26/02/2017 23:02

I actually like Monopoly - if you actually follow the rules and have auctions for most properties, and charge interest on mortgages, it is quite fiendish. If you just roll dice and go round the board, then yes it's tedious.

Only ever managed to play it with a BBC Micro, though...

crankyagnes · 27/02/2017 08:01

I'll agree with the fiendish, I haven't played using the proper rules since the long summer holidays when I was a teenager and had nothing much else to do all day. Those were the days! But, no, still not a game I'd play if I had a choice.

I've just ordered Patchwork, I've had an eye on it for aaaaages, and it was at a reasonable price on amazon. Looking forward to trying it when it comes.

RikVIP · 27/03/2017 09:36

DS opened some of his birthday presents early today (we're staying at my mum's) - main one being the Thunderbirds co-op board game. Chosen by me and paid for by my dad as he doesn't like choosing!

ToniMumsnet · 01/04/2017 14:38

Hope you don't mind me joining in. The 3 games we play most at home are Carcassonne, Labrinth and Munchkin.

They all tend to create quite a laugh.

Although when we were decluttering we found dh old Blood Bowl. Its agent, but still pretty good.

FairytalesAreBullshit · 02/04/2017 16:51

Not playing any at the moment, as whilst DS has got to the stage where he knows you have to play to the rules. It's not the end of the world if you lose. DD gets in a proper state if things don't go her way.

We like Carcassonne, Kinder Bunnies, Braggart, Nuts.

Story cubes is a winner but DS has lost the red dice, which you really need.

With Braggart and Nuts, we bought 2 copies to bulk it out a bit.

I'd love to go gaming clubs, where they play board games, as I love trying out new stuff, but I'm not well enough. I've got a few apps for some of the games.

Are any of you going to that board game convention that's usually in B'ham on August bank hols?

Could have a MN meet up and play some games.

I love looking at the new games they have, also on a Sunday being cheeky & asking for one of the special packs they give to those staying at the hotel. I've got some decent graphic novels & new games.

What's your favourite type of game?

I've been thinking about historical games. I found an envelope I'd not opened, completely forgot what was inside, it was grave stones that are for re-enactment that you need to paint etc. I thought they were cool so put my name in a competition and won 12 of these 10mm grave stones, I'd completely forgot about. At first I thought they were terrain.

Are any of you on Board Game Geek?

Giving like the area you come from, London, SE, SW, Midlands, NW etc, where is everyone from?

Cagliostro · 09/04/2017 10:45

Bit late in replying but we went to the Board Game Expo last year, it was great fun!

I'm gutted as my morning sickness is currently made much worse by reading Confused and I can't currently stomach the thought of concentrating on board games 😱😩

I'm wondering if I should name the bump Meeple.

DD made me proud, we were talking about the baby and she said oooh we are going to have to get some baby-friendly board games! Brainwashing works...

Exposition · 04/06/2017 01:15

Any MN gamers at the UKGE this year?
We've done two days so far, haven't bought anything yet, will do that tomorrow.
Went to live pandemic which was fun, and the dice tower top five, also v good.

Cagliostro · 20/06/2017 21:54

Did you enjoy the UKGE? I hope we can go another year, it was fun when we went. My kids struggled with the noise and crowds though so not something I'd want to make them do again unless they wanted to.

Luckily I've started to manage a it more playing now after a few months of torture not being able to. DS (7) and I had a quiet morning to ourselves today and played castle panic (won for the first time, turns out I'd previously never noticed the 'discard' option... Blush) and forbidden desert for our quickest win ever. I love how he's getting into games so much. He especially loves 'teamwork games' (he doesn't quite get the word 'co-op') :)

I've got him QBitz Extreme for his birthday in August, he is an absolute demon at the original.

What are you all lusting after at the moment? I'm picking up Kingdomino tomorrow, I've heard great things and it seems light enough that DD (who really struggles with concentration) will enjoy it. Seriously tempted by World Monuments as the building bit would be very popular in this house! Still dreaming about Flashpoint and Cacao, I have a bit of money saved up so I really should just get on with it.

Cagliostro · 20/06/2017 21:54

Oh and also we DID name the bump Meeple :o

BuildersBum · 23/06/2017 18:06

We did the Sunday of the Expo and LOVED it.
It was a last minute decision to go. I was knackered after staying up late on the Saturday watching the news, as Borough Market is one of our favourite places and then getting up super early for the long drive to Birmingham . .. but it was so worth it.

We met the Dice Tower team which my daughter was super thrilled with. Crowds weren't as bad as expected. Played some of the kids games. Could of played more but I was too tired to concentrate on learning new family / heavy games.

Bought quite a few games - 2 bdays and father's day in June ;-) - all of which were bargains / got a promo with. Not played any yet, but it's lovely having a stack to look forward to. Like adventures waiting to happen Smile

Kingdomino was one of our expo haul.
I'm getting Viticulture next week, which I'm very excited about.

Asmodee have an App sale on, if anyone is interested Wink

Cagliostro · 23/06/2017 18:16

Oooh thanks for the heads up! I'll see what there is :o

Family game night tomorrow in which the aim is to play some of our unplayed games! We have at least 12. Main one I want to try is Priests of Ra, which I got because of a family love of ancient Egypt

BuildersBum · 23/06/2017 18:52

Priests of Ra is our oldest unplayed game Blush
