Can anyone answers these questions about selling a PS3 to buy a PS4 please

I am totally ignorant of the whole topic.

My son is 10 and has decided he would like to sell his PS3 and games and buy a PS4. I have some questions.

Firstly, how can we find out how many GB his PS3 has?

It is 3 years old and in great condition, he has 15 games he wishes to sell. What realistic price is he likely to achieve? I am not willing to pay for it so any shortfall he will have to save up over time himself. I have seen that PS4 are around £300-£350.

He wants to keep another 10 or so games and says he is able to "transfer" them to a PS4 is that at all possible or will he have to sell them and repurchase them for PS4?

He also says something about "playstation plus" which negates the need for an ethernet cable but costs £12 a month. I am refusing to pay for this. However he says this is the only way to have internet on the PS4? Is that true? If so he wont be getting one at all.

The PS4 isn't backwards compatible so you can't put a PS3 game into a PS4 and expect it to work. You can't repurchase them either. We've kept our PS3 so we can play PS3 games on it. It's very annoying, and something dh and I have complained about a lot.

There are loads of benefits to playstation plus (free games every month) and some games do require it to play online with other people, but you don't need it for just accessing the Internet or using any other streaming services, so it really depends which games he wants to play as to whether or not he's need it. You can buy an annual pass for it which is a lot cheaper (I think between £35 or £40, can't remember off hand), or a three month pass.

No idea about how much you might expect from selling the games, and different games will attract different amounts so really depends what he wants to sell, and where he sells them. Probably best putting them on eBay or somewhere like that rather than taking them to a games shop though. I've seen second hand PS3 consoles for between £70 and £120, depending on the memory, on some games sites and shops. You should be able to find out the size of the memory in the settings menu.

I too am clueless with it, but.......

IMHO and it is only my opinion - We have a PS3 with lots of games and a PS4 with hardly any. Why? the ps4 is only now starting to get games age suitable, my ds is 14. They are also very expensive.

DS says the PS4 is not backwards compatible so PS3 games won't play, also PS+ is £14 for 3 MONTHS and is not the only way to connect to the internet, (you can use normal internet) however some games (most published by SONY) you have to have PS+ to play online, though as a bonus you have 2 or more free games a month.

I personally wish we had never bought it (DH also wanted it) as it has been abit of a dead donkey from day one. Games are really expensive and alot are age inappropriate. though ds would disagree with that. but then he would still be happy (and still is as does still play) with the PS3.

It's a blu ray player too, provided it's hooked up to an HD TV. Also plays 3D blu rays with a 3D TV.

We have both a ps3 and ps4 as dh plays some games on one and some on the other as they are not backwards compatible

Thanks everyone, really helpful posts. We have agreed to wait until the new year in the hope that consoles might be cheaper, and possibly there might be some more age appropriate games then too?

Im really not keen on having two consoles plus controllers, leads and games etc. in fact it just wouldnt fit in the tv unit. He'll have to choose one or the other. I'll pass on to him all that has been said here and let him mull it over. Good news about the PS+ though, i could justify paying £35-£40 over a year.

It's only new releases on PS4 which are very expensive (even then all the earlier playstations also had games around the fifty pound mark, so in fact they are cheaper than ever, factoring in inflation) but games of about a year or so ago are not expensive. A quick look on Amazon showed loads under 25 quid, and quite a few under 20.

But the PS3 is also a blu ray player. Hardly a reason to upgrade for that.
