Have just finished this game on GBA now...after having it for over a decade Blush

Anyone else a fan of the old Zelda games?

Big Zelda fan here! Particularly of Ocarina and Majora's Mask, the last was so inventive. I like the Minish Cap too. I liked Windwaker, as far as it went, a great shame large bits of it got curtailed.

But yes, Navi... shut up!

Indomitable · 01/08/2015 14:24

Ha ha, Ashvis, that's what I keep telling myself! Coordination & problem solving. It would help if he could read the dialogue himself though!

I'll have another try with he wii this arvo.

I wouldn't call mysel a gamer though. My limit is a bit of portal - I haven't developed the coordination enough so I get really tense and frustrated! It's been years since I played anything. (About 4 years, coincidentally!)

Ashvis · 01/08/2015 18:04

Have been doing some looking Indominatable and apparently you need a GameCube memory card and controller (been a long while since I last used mine), have you put in a GC memory card? Apparently the newer wii had some more trouble playing GC games.

Just read that the new Zelda game for WiiU has a release date "TBD" rather than 2016 now. They're going to do a dual release with NX in 2017, aren't they?! God, it's going to be Twilight Princess all over again Sad

Indomitable · 01/08/2015 18:19

Ok, thanks Ash, I'll try that and let you know.

oddfodd · 03/08/2015 03:35

We play old GameCube games on our wii (not wii U). You need a controller and memory card but that shouldn't affect the disk loading.

I also think it sounds faulty. Do other discs play ok in it?

Ashvis · 03/08/2015 07:44

When I was teaching I used video games as an incentive to encourage poor readers! I brought in my 3ds for a treat on Friday afternoons, and we had a wii in the classroom. Any time anyone got a bit fed up with reading and was finding it difficult, reminding them how useful reading is for video gaming and using the internet properly spurred them on! My ds is quite capable of learning new skills, but is very self directed (only does things he wants to do, very hard to encourage him to do anything unless he sees a point to it). I've made a big point of sounding out words when he asks me to look for stuff on the internet or finding a toy to investigate on the Amazon app. It'll be a good long while before he can read himself but he's decided that learning the alphabet is worth his time now! Video games rock, they are much more valuable than a whole lot of people give them credit for.

Yeah, mine seems to be working well too, if the controller and the memory card don't work you may have to play Zelda on a different platform Indomitable. Grinding does not sound good.

I agree, toon Link is just the cutest! The kids in my classes tended to love Phantom Hourglass (even if I got tired of the dungeon) Ds takes my toy toon Link out with us reasonably often, and he always gets admired! Was delighted to see a teenage girl at the park this weekend with a Zelda t shirt on, if I'd been wearing mine too I'd have been tempted to approach her for a Zelda appreciation fest. Definitely worth persevering with Ocarina and Majora's Mask even if the Link isn't quite as appealing to you. The gameplay and story lines are just magic.

MadeMan · 03/08/2015 12:16

One of my favourite gaming moments ever was on N64, running into Hyrule Field for the first time after leaving Kokiri Forest. Smile

This was back when 3D gaming was in it's infancy so it was quite an impressive feeling at the time to have this open world to explore. I'd already played Link to the Past on SNES which is a fantastic world to play in too.

MadeMan · 03/08/2015 12:21

I also loved the day and night cycle of Hyrule Field and at twilight would try and absolutely leg it for the Castle Town before the drawbridge went up and shut for the night. Grin

MadeMan · 03/08/2015 12:25

Also (I'll have to stop in a minute) going to the top of Death Mountain at night and seeing the lights on in Kakariko Village way down below. There are so many cool things in Ocarina of Time. Smile

minionwithdms · 03/08/2015 20:41

It's all the little features in Ocarina of Time that make it one of my favourites Smile It's always interesting seeing the lengths gone to to include small details that make the game more realistic. The best Zelda games are the ones that have been thought through really well.

Just noticed my trusty Game Boy Advance is starting to break apart after decades of frustrated Zelda-ing! I'm feeling slightly nostalgic and heartbroken. Tempted to save up for this upgrade...

Minion that is gorgeous, I bloody love it! I was very tempted to get a special Zelda 3dsXL when my 3ds fell down the loo died but couldn't quite justify the money. Next time...I am sorry your GBA is dying though. Thank goodness Nintendo are great at releasing in the virtual console, and there are still amazing ones out there to buy.

MadeMan, what lovely favourite gaming moments! They are awesome. It's a proper mad dash to the town gates, isn't it?! First time I really saw a Zelda game was at uni. One of my flat mates had an N64 with both Ocarina and Majora's Mask. On the same night he showed us all the opening to Ocarina, and the Deku Temple in Majora's Mask. He was a pretty crappy flat mate but I always think of him fondly for introducing me to Zelda Grin
No matter what else I am playing, going back to Ocarina is just great.

MadeMan · 05/08/2015 18:28

"On the same night he showed us all the opening to Ocarina..."

First time you plug the cartridge in an N64, or card in the 3DS and see the intro Smile

Like minion says, it's all the little features that make OoT my favourite Zelda so far. I've always liked the thunder, lighting and rain in the graveyard behind Kakariko Village as well.

Ashvis · 07/08/2015 07:58

Aw, MadeMan I've goosebumps! Just love it! Yup, little details. They are completely absorbing and lovely.

BadLad I've done the first dungeon in Oracle Of Ages, and about to start the second and I am really enjoying it! It's early in the game, I know, but thank you for encouraging me to have a look at it. Already planning on playing Seasons when I'm finished Grin

minionwithdms · 11/08/2015 13:18

I managed to get hold of a copy of Link Between Worlds, and really loving it so far! It reminds me so much of Link to the Past, but with lots of extras. It's weirdly cool to see all the familiar dungeons in 3D. I've just managed to make it to Lorule.

OP posts:
BadLad · 11/08/2015 13:34

You're welcome - hope you enjoy the rest of it.

Anyone tried the original Zelda recently? I have it on the Gameboy Advance NES classics series. It's very difficult.

Ashvis · 11/08/2015 18:56

Minion, that's awesome, really glad you're enjoying it! I'm definitely going back to replay it sometime. It's a super game. The renting the items is a bit of a pain, but I loved that they were all available really quickly. I liked looking for all the lost babies too, gave an extra reason to explore thoroughly, and they are terribly cute. What kind of a mother loses 100 babies though?! No social services in Hyrule, eh?

BadLad I'm now at the boss of the second dungeon (stressful family visit this weekend just past, not enough time for gaming Angry Sad) but hoping to finish the dungeon tonight. Haven't played the original for ages cause it's so difficult! I downloaded it onto one of my Nintendo devices (Wii maybe?) and remember getting proper grumpy at how easy it was to die.

MadeMan · 11/08/2015 20:43

I'm going to have to get back into Windwaker at some point.

Ashvis · 11/08/2015 20:51

MadeMan, yes, you really do. It's wonderful. Though the moving statues weird me out after watching Dr Who (Hylian version of weeping angels?)

Bloody boss is a PITA!

minionwithdms · 14/08/2015 22:51

I HATE the Moldorm version of Ganon. After that, the final boss seems like a relief to me Grin

OP posts:
MadeMan · 14/08/2015 23:37

I like taking photographs in Windwaker. Smile

WiIdfire · 14/08/2015 23:45

I may not have ALL the games or consoles, but how many of you can say they have the Ocarina of Time music as their ringtone?

(I may judge people depending on whether they recognise it. If they dont recognise the 1-up sound from Mario that is my message alert, then they are dead to me :-D)

Ashvis · 15/08/2015 15:36

I have that ringtone! And the treasure chest opening noise for my text tone. Love that tone. My big mummy carry everything bag has the triforce bird logo on it too. I try not to use it when wearing my Zelda t shirt. I clearly don't act like I'm in my late 30s, but I spent a long time not fully embracing my geekiness so I now revel in it and don't care what other people think. I was quite pleased when I saw a guy in his early 20s with the same bag as me! Wonder if I can find a Zelda phone case...

Photo taking is great fun in Windwaker - great side quest Grin. Some are a right bloody pain to get though.

Holberg · 15/08/2015 15:45

My ringtone is the fairy fountain! Grin
Not sure which game it was ripped from in particular, probably an N64 version. (old phone)
I love the stylisation of Wind Waker, after update of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, it seemed quite retro when it came out.

I love watching DH complete Zelda- the fighting is just too hard for me, but I'm the navigator!

We have that CD mentioned above- it's wonderful.
My favourite tune though is Epona's Theme from ?Ocarina of Time, and it wasn't on the CD, sadly.

MadeMan · 15/08/2015 20:11

Some of the music and effects in these games are fantastic and easily fit with being ringtones or message alerts. Smile

It's not a Zelda game, but Terranigma on Super Nintendo is a great game in a similar style to that of Link To The Past and also has Worth tracking it down if you can find it, or emulate it.
