Can anyone explain Guitar Hero to me please?

DD would like this game for Christmas. Am I right in thinking that I need to buy the game and a guitar? If so, could you recommend which game/guitar please? I'm usually quite good on this kind of stuff, but for some reason this has really got my brain fuddled . Thanks.

As to which game, it very much depends on what music she likes, there's a huge range. Look on game or gamestation sites, they usually have the range of games.
