Thank you - somehow thought it was a mix

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/09/2025 09:05

Sainsbury’s used to do a pack of 4 but cutlets which I loved. Not had them for at least a year now, annoyingly.

The Clive’s nut roast is tiny and not very exciting but I buy it sometimes if it’s stickered.

Marks did a gorgeous nut roast last Christmas. I bought a couple and froze in single portions. So nice. Really hoping they do it again.

Birdsongsingingagainandagain · 21/09/2025 09:11

Whenever I make nut roast I always vow to do it more often as it hasn’t hard and usually tastes great. That Tesco one has millions of ingredients and looks quite UPF so that’s putting me off.

What recipe do you use? I’ve only ever made one once and it was expensive to make and not great. I can’t remember which recipe I used though.

WhamBamThankU · 21/09/2025 09:36

I moan regularly about the lack of nut cutlets

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 11:30

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie the Marks ones are usually lovely and always with a really good sauce which is never enough and needs to be at least doubled !

I was reading about the lack of nut roasts and it says it’s due to the demand for more meat substitute products. My take in that is ‘Old School’ vegetarians (I am one) loved these things and had been eating them for years but there has been such a surge of vegans now that they are going where the sales are, I don’t like the fake meat it tastes of Hot Dog ‘smell’ to me, I do have quorn sausages with a breakfast though. So I think home made is the way to go, IF you can find a good recipe. Someone on the vegan Christmas thread just suggested one which looks very easy.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/09/2025 11:40

I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but nut loaf is really easy to make and freezes well. Lots of ideas on this thread.

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 11:48

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g eons ago when I was a teenager I worked for Barclays and so did my BF at the time and weekly they would do a nut roast in the staff canteen and he would always have the nut roast, he wasn’t veggie but he loved it, I thought it was quite endearing that he liked it 🤣🤣
really becuase it was much worse for people taking the piss out of you for eating nut roast in those days - still happens now 🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks for the link and recipe

I'm don't know
Do vegan people really want the rake meat products
As a family we tolerate it occasionally..but massively prefer nut roast type foods or tofu
A lot of the fake meat is just to meaty for us
I suspect companies are catering for meat eaters who want the occasional healthy choice ,but still want a meaty taste

Fake not rake

@Autumnpug7 yes I think so, the meat free Mondays, Veganuary and things like barbecues. And maybe some people that really miss burgers, but there clearly is a big demographic as they are everywhere, much harder to find a burger that’s not pretend meat, I will post what I read…..

‘Nut cutlets haven't completely disappeared, though they may be less common. Some retailers offer them, like Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer, but others, such as Asda, have discontinued them to focus on plant-based alternatives. If you're struggling to find pre-made nut cutlets, you can also find recipes online to make them from scratch, or use alternative ingredients like stuffing mix to create your own.

Why you might not find them everywhere:
Shift to Plant-Based Alternatives:
Many brands are moving away from traditional vegetarian products, like nut cutlets, in favor of newer, more elaborate plant-based meat substitutes.

Retailer Discontinuation:
Some supermarkets, like the retailer Asda, have stopped stocking nut cutlets to focus on other vegetarian options.

Where you might find them:
Specialty Supermarkets:
Keep an eye out at larger supermarkets and those with a wider range of frozen vegetarian and meat-free products, such as Sainsbury's.

Christmas Seasons:
Nut-based roasts are often more widely available during the Christmas period, according to a Reddit thread.

Marks & Spencer:
Marks & Spencer is one of the retailers that still sells nut roasts, which are a similar concept to nut cutlets.

What to do if you can't find them:
Make your own:
You can find recipes online for nut cutlets and nut roast, allowing you to make them at home.

Try substitutes:
You can use stuffing mix to create a similar dish, especially if you're not vegan, as adding an egg can help it hold its shape. ‘

@Autumnpug7 isn’t it !

for this I read ‘faux meat’
Shift to Plant-Based Alternatives:
Many brands are moving away from traditional vegetarian products, like nut cutlets, in favor of newer, more elaborate plant-based meat substitutes.

I think the manufacturers particularly that Moving Mountains range seem to be the vegan burgers available in the pub chains like Vintage Inns, so they must be selling a lot

I think it can cause flatulence and stomach issues as well - not great 💩

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 14:42

@Autumnpug7 i posted this the other day talking of fake meat, I can’t get over it if I’m honest ! Looks so real and off putting

Autumnpug7 · 21/09/2025 14:52

Goodness no ..I absolutely could not eat that
I'm vegan a long time ,...and I think my revulsion of meat type vegan products goes back to being forced to them as a child and teenager ,and sat at the table for hours not allowed to move until I'd eaten some vile animal flesh .
I actually went vegetarian on my first day at secondary school ,as they did a display in the hall on where your food came from ...but my dreadful parents of course would not respect me making a decision for myself like that

That’s just horrible.

I haven’t eaten meat since 1980 and I have no idea why people would want to eat something that looks like that
I’m assuming these foods are for the newly converted or meat eaters that occasionally want something else

I'm not against their production. Anything to stop so many animals being killed, I just wouldn’t eat them.

Im enjoying the ideas on here and have done @CalzoneOnLegs idea for nutty stuffing balls today 👍

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 16:41

@Autumnpug7 thats so sad, I am sorry. Luckily my dear beautiful Mum turned veggie soon after I did so it was ideal. When she went into her care home 2022 out of the 38 residents she was the only vegetarian, we had a few issues with what they were serving her. Very unimaginative, quorn sausages for every meal ! We soon sorted that for her, the pasta and cheese sauce with Salad was her favourite meal there. Bless her ❤️

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 16:43

@DrPrunesqualer @Autumnpug7

that fake meat is borderline horrific isn’t it 🧟

PilatesPeach · 21/09/2025 16:50

I am vegetarian - have been for many years since I was 6 when my late mum became vegetarian - I don't want fake meat - I do remember when you could get the 4 nut cutlets from Sainsburys and also Cauldron Foods - nut roast is nice but not the same - I used to like a nut cutlet in a bun like a burger with toppings etc. Many of the fake meat products are so full of chemicals and if you are a vegetarian for many years like me - fake meat is as off-putting as real meat - even the texture. I must make some cutlets!

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 16:55

@DrPrunesqualer same here!! I love stuffing balls, and Yorkshire puds too ❤️
I like that there are more imaginative packet stuffings available at Christmas, I stock up.

hope you enjoy them x

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 16:59

@PilatesPeach I know exactly what you mean. i can recommend a really nice burger in sainsburys that’s neither fake meat, or chopped up vegetables (though I do love them) Sainsburys plant pioneers, they’re thick and hold their shape and in a bun with salad / cheese just so nice.

I don’t think this is it at all. I’m a vegan who hates pretty much all fake meats other than Linda McCartney sausages. The r/veganuk subreddit was full of sad posts when the Artisan Grains nut roast got discontinued. There are lots of vegans who eat whole foods plant based, and most quorn isn’t even vegan either. I suspect they just have a better profit margin on fake meats (that’s certainly the main cause for restaurants doing it - definitely not demand). Supermarkets have really slimmed down their ranges of dried pulses in the last few years too as not cost effective enough for them.

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 21:14

@yonem thanks for that, it just seems quite difficult to get what I’m used to…..have grains and pulses shot up in price perhaps ? Probably like everything else has.
used to be though you could go to a pub/restaurant and there would be a few things to choose from now it is generally the one size fits all option vegan burger (with gluten free bun if needed) I don’t eat out much now as it’s all quite uninspiring 😢
