Vegan child diet worries

Posting on the vegan board.

DD 8 has been slowly cutting out meat and fish from her diet. (I’m vegan, DH eats anything that moves).
There’s a choice of foods available to her daily, along with plenty of fruit and veg but she is very picky. She won’t eat any pulses/beans/nuts/ seeds/ salads etc so we are worried she isn’t getting the right vitamins/ minerals.

She’s a healthy weight, active, never sick.

Does she need a supplement? TIA

@curious79

Could you give an example of what a vegan could eat to get enough protein a day? You know a lot more than me so I'd be grateful.

A lot of people are suggesting vegan sausages and burgers but these seem to be more carbs than protein rich.

I tracked my protein intake on my fitness pal when I was a heavy gym user and my protein intake was great. Can't remember my exact diet at the time but was vegan and I did use some hemp protein powder.
Also the usuals as pp said as well.

I don't approve of vegan diets for children.

Thanks for letting us know. You make such ‘useful’ contributions to threads I’ve noticed.

As well as the essential B12, and the multivits in general, and attention to protein, you also need to think about iron intake.

I’m glad you’re reassured but please do remember that you are the parent, the adult here and you are the one who decides what goes on your DD’s plate, you can’t possibly abdicate that to an 8 year old.

Definitely go for a supplement. Have you tried adding nutritional yeast to her meals?

Sorciere1 · 06/06/2025 22:14

Why are you catering to her? My mother made healthy tasty meals and I had to eat them.
Give her a well-balanced diet and tell her no nonsense. Sometimes it's simply a child's way of wielding power.

I’m vegan and when DD was too, it was non negotiable that she ate a varied diet, or she couldn’t be.

Does she like crispy tofu? How about lentils in a lovely ragu, cottage pie or dahl where they break right down?I always add nutritional yeast to anything and everything it will go into for extra b12
