'Become a vegan' advert

I don't know if the vegan advert depicting a live piglet being delivered to the door of a young couple who ordered a meal delivery is new, or I only saw it for the first time yesterday. If you have seen this 'become a vegan advert' thoughts would be interesting.

As for the advert, having been a vegan campaigner for many years, ones like this do work on some people which is why they’re made. Other people respond to different things. Others won’t be persuaded by anything. Vegan organisations will use a variety of ways to try to persuade individuals to go vegan to reach the maximum number of people.

Nasty posts. Never been any nasty posts

And why are you responding to my post to tell me there has been no nasty posts? Do you think it’s you I’m talking about? Lol

Vegans I know do care about those things too. You do know that it is possible to care about more than one thing at a time don’t you?

Unfortunately we have to exist in a non vegan world and none of us can exist without causing harm on some level. It is annoying when vegans are expected to do this impossible task and if they can’t, then apparently they’re hypocrites or something.

The vegan board is usually a nice board where posters support each other about vegan diets, products and issues, you’ve deliberately tried to start an argument and bring negativity here. I don’t think this is the best board to be negative about veganism and the fact you have posted here says a lot. At least one of the posters you have attracted here has been previously banned for their continued nasty posts about vegans and they’ve popped up again. What a surprise.

I'm fairly new here so I assumed because I was asking for views on the 'advert' it would be vegans who replied given its a vegan thread. I did not deliberately start an argument & I can't control what others post, only what I post & there were no bad intentions.

Sure.

You chose to post on the vegan board to tell us you object to an advert promoting veganism. You knew exactly what you were doing and who you would attract to a board that is otherwise supportive. How sad.

Berrypeach · 30/12/2024 16:57

I'm not a vegan but often read the board to get ideas for meals and products as I eat a plant based diet a lot of the time.

The advert wouldn't convince me to be a vegan and I'm sure it will put a lot of people's backs up but I supposed different things work for different people so it's just one of many ways advertiser's will advertise vegan products.

The thing that works when it comes to making me eat less animal products is just people sharing recipes and products they love which is why I visit the vegan board a lot. Bit as I said different things will work for different people and I'm sure the advert, combined with veganuary being everywhere will convert some people to veganism or at least to reduce their meat consumption.

Exactly this. I will never give up meat, or fish, eggs, or dairy, but I always try to buy the best and local. I can hear the chickens that lay my eggs, I can see some of the "meat" roaming around the fields from my bedroom window. I regularly go and have a chat with them. They DO have a lovely life compared to their wild cousins and I have no issues with them being slaughtered for my consumption.

I’m a meat eater myself, but there’s something quite jarring about I regularly go and have a chat with them coupled with I have no issues with them being slaughtered for my consumption.

Absolute rubbish to the point I didn't even realise vegans didn't wear leather. I assumed having little interest in it that it was just a diet. DH informed me tonight it was a whole movement. I can now assume people on this board are so sensitive that any criticism or personal opinion, even if it's nothing to do with lifestyle but an 'advert' (which I hated) is an insult to all vegans. I have absolutely no objection to adverts promoting the vegan diet. I am allowed to express my opinion about this particular advert. Surely there must be people within the vegan community that don't agree with everything including this macabre advert. You learn every day & on that account I would urge mumsnet admin to remove the thread lest it gets even more misconstrued.
I don't know how to go about it.

This is the type of balanced opinion that helps. Perhaps people like me who were shocked to the point of being turned off a vegan lifestyle will help campaigners realise they might be doing exactly that by promoting it this way. Anyway,I've asked for the thread to be removed.

I’m vegan and agree this wasn’t the right board for it. Would you go on other specific boards set up for certain groups and be negative? It’s nothing to do with being sensitive. A general board would have been fine to discuss it.

As has been said already, this type of advert works on some people. It doesn’t work on you but you’re not their only viewer.

As I mentioned I'm fairly new here. My immediate thoughts were click on topics & post a thread.I searched the list & didn't find a more acceptable one. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone.

As well as not consuming any animal products, vegans also don't use anything using any part of an animal or anything tested on an animal so no leather, can't drink a lot of wines, can't use certain cosmetics, nail polish, take some vitamins or supplements etc. If it's just a diet thing people usually say they're plant-based rather than vegan.

Thank you. I do feel ignorant now in this respect. I honestly thought it was just about a plant based diet. I knew vegans disliked eating animals but never knew it was to the extent of not wearing leather etc. You live & learn. I say this with all due respect. I'm sure if I tried to live like this I'd spend my life looking over my shoulder terrified I'd consumed or wore anything involving animals & freaking out if I did. Hats off to those who succeed.

I know it’s not an original thought, but for me I can’t take vegans seriously unless they also care this much about humans who have made products that they use.

Clothing, iPhones etc which are made by human beings in inhumane conditions. Why care so much about a chicken living in awful conditions but not a child in a sweat shop in China?

If nobody buys any more iPhones will conditions improve in China? Or would people just be in further poverty? I do care but I don’t think there’s a simple solution to that issue.

If nobody ever bought meat/eggs/ dairy no more animals would be bred, raised and killed so it is a very different supply and demand point.

But whether you take me seriously or not is not a major issue for me. I would, however, be really happy to hear any of your solutions for how you resolve the inhumane conditions people are kept in when mass producing goods for the western world? Or are you saying you equally don’t care about that or the inhumane conditions the animals whose bodies you pay for are in, therefore you are not hypocritical, which means you can be taken more seriously?
