Fruitarianism

Has anybody got any experience of this?
I’ve looked into it allot and it’s something I’m switching to.
I love every part of the idea of it. I love how natural it is. I love how simple it is. I love how environmentally friendly it is. I love what I’ve read and watched that it does for your body and I love how people have said it makes them feel from the inside out.
I was just hoping to hear from anybody with personal experience of this way of living.
Thanks!

Can I ask how it's environmentally friendly? Unless you are only eating native fruit in season they have to be grown abroad and transported. Also fruitarianism is incredibly extreme and bad for your health why have you decided that's what you want to do?

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:07

Yes I will be eating as much locally sourced and in season fruit as possible but even with eating some foods that have had to be transported I truly believe it is much more environmentally friendly than the environmental output of other foods.
Yes it’s extreme, I’m aware, I’m just trying to learn as much as possible and if it turns out to be bad for me I will look to change my diet.
I have decided that it’s the way I want to live for all the reasons I have listed. None of my views are 100% concrete fact, they are just my views.

Sugar.

And air miles.

English winter
Fruit will get boring pretty quickly.

DragonDoor · 25/09/2021 12:12

Other foods, such as seasonal vegetables? Hmm

It’s not a healthy diet at all and will cause long term health problems. It’s disordered eating.

What’s your relationship with food like generally?

oneglassandpuzzled · 25/09/2021 12:13

You’d have to take lots of supplements to make it healthy. Doesn’t seem very natural.

ShaneTheThird · 25/09/2021 12:15

Yes if you live in the UK you will have a very very limited choice of fruit and will definitely not get enough carbs, protein, b vitamins or anything else people need to survive. If I was you op I would rethink this. There's a YouTuber whose name I've forgotten who lives as a fruitarian and it's shockingly sad. He is absolutely emaciated, very very unwell man but claims he is so healthy and he eats loads. He lives in the tropics and needs so much medical attention because he will die soon due to this diet. He's not the only one. The UK is plentiful with vegetables as well why not utilise them? And grains aplenty here too.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 25/09/2021 12:15

Do you mean literally only fruit?
Raw vegan is one thing, which includes vegetables, grains, oil etc but literally only fruit is NOT how we are supposed to eat
That amount of sugar will give you insulin resistance, your stomach will be irritated and you'll be hungry and unsatisfied.
Have you followed freelee on YouTube? She's raw vegan and calls herself a frugivore. She is pretty extreme but even she isn't fruit only.

Mybalconyiscracking · 25/09/2021 12:16

Go and eat a bacon sandwich, then see how you feel?

grey12 · 25/09/2021 12:16

Doesn't seem like the healthiest diet. A lot of sugar. Maybe vegan with a lot of fruit?

superram · 25/09/2021 12:17

You’ll also have the shits….

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:17

I feel like this will give me enough options.

Wasn’t there a fruitarian in “Notting hill” who’d only eat fallen, not picked?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 25/09/2021 12:18

So it's raw vegan?
Have you don't any research into raw vegan diets?

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:19

@ShaneTheThird what is his YouTube name?
I’m interested in getting all views so I do appreciate this.

@SolitaryTree do you have a long history of disordered eating ?

Book an appointment with your GP and ask to be referred to a dietician.

MichelleScarn · 25/09/2021 12:21

@AlphabetAerobics

Wasn’t there a fruitarian in “Notting hill” who’d only eat fallen, not picked?
Because fruit scream when picked I think it was?
Hellocatshome · 25/09/2021 12:21

It is a very bad idea.

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:21

@AlphabetAerobics
“And these carrots?”
“Have been murdered….”
I’m not doing it for these reasons 🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/09/2021 12:21

"So, these carrots..."

"Have been murdered"

😂 😂 😂

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 25/09/2021 12:22

Too much sugar

Very unhealthy

EastWestWhosBest · 25/09/2021 12:26

It has been around for a long time, well, since the 70s. I remember a case of fruitarian parents who had their children taken into care because they fed them a fruitarian diet.

As I recall it’s a diet that consists of only eating things where you are eating things that can be taken without killing the entire plant. So no carrots for example as you are eating the root of the plant. Nothing of the plant exists after you harvest it.

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:26

To those asking what my relationship with food is like and if I have a history of disordered eating.
It’s not been good in the past and yes I do.
I do however believe I’m mostly on top of that now though.
I am no longer underweight and in fact am actually classed as overweight and am not looking to loose weight either, just to become healthier.
I suppose I’m just looking for a way of eating that I actually enjoy and fits in best with my beliefs and how I want to live.
Maybe I’m wrong, that’s why I’ve asked here for real life opinions and experiences.

This is an absolutely dreadful diet and some people do feel better temporarily and on a high (from all the sugar and vitamins) but long term it leads to deficiencies in protein, which can cause hair loss, tooth loss, muscle loss including the muscle around your heart. It's very disordered eating and most people who eat this way have Orthorexia. We need a balance in our diets between the macronutrients, and all of the micro nutrients in the right amounts. I can't see how you would get all amino acids, protein, iron and calcium you need especially.

Gingernaut · 25/09/2021 12:30

www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/what-fruitarian-diet

It's an extreme fad diet - very little protein, B12 and iron and also dangerously high in sugar.

Maltedmilkdrinks · 25/09/2021 12:32

This is disordered eating sometimes called orthorexia
Yes I've known 2 people during my life so this. Neither had a healthy relationship with food and their body.
You won't live longer or be healthier long term from it. So why do it?

Food isn't unhealthy. If you don't want animals to suffer or to eat additives or overly processed foods then that's understandable but there are steps in between that and this level of restriction.
To put it bluntly, you need support to discuss why you feel this way before you get much worse. Please seek this.
