Fruitarianism

Has anybody got any experience of this?
I’ve looked into it allot and it’s something I’m switching to.
I love every part of the idea of it. I love how natural it is. I love how simple it is. I love how environmentally friendly it is. I love what I’ve read and watched that it does for your body and I love how people have said it makes them feel from the inside out.
I was just hoping to hear from anybody with personal experience of this way of living.
Thanks!

I'm afraid I don't believe that you've dealt with your disordered eating.

What you're describing is almost unheard of in people who do not have an eating disorder.

Please seek help to manage this.

ThedaBara · 25/09/2021 12:33

As others have said there is no way for you to eat this way in an environmentally healthy way on British fruit alone. I have heard of fruitarians who have relocated to warmer climates to be able to have ready access to fruit though, so maybe that's an option.
The other factor is nutrients. If you are a vegan you are hopefully already supplementing for b12, and you would need to keep an eye out on other micronutrients if switching exclusively to fruit (calcium, zinc and omegas being the main ones). And finally protein, unless you include nuts and beans in your diet you are going to have to eat about a dozen avocados per day to get an RDA for protein.
And finally, think of the expense. Maybe that's not a factor for you, but I know of fully raw vegans who spend around £400 a month on food for one person.
Why don't you try it and see how you like it? It's not a mainstream diet for a reason

waybill · 25/09/2021 12:34

All that fructose will play havoc with your teeth.

Eating only fruit is not a normal or natural diet for any great ape, which is what humans are, after all.

ShaneTheThird · 25/09/2021 12:37

Op it's great that you have acknowledged your past history in regards to disordered eating. Fruitarian is a dangerous diet. Unfortunately it's also full of evangelicals if you look up any fruitarian YouTubers they are all incredibly skinny with not defined fat or muscle but they will tell you they are healthier than ever. Also many of them have rotting teeth due to the sugar and acids in fruit dentists can tell straight away people who eat too much fruit. It's also bad for the gut, the pancreas and the body in general. A good healthy vegan diet is very possible and can be natural and healthy so it seems worth looking into that rather than fruitarian which has been defined by medical journals as extreme and not healthy.

ShaneTheThird · 25/09/2021 12:38

Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Cherries, Gooseberries, Greengages, Loganberries, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Rhubarb, Strawberries, rhubarb, apples and pears.

That's pretty much it for your seasonal British fruit.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 25/09/2021 12:40

Hey yes! I know someone who did this. Were super committed to it.

They died. This is not a joke. It was extremely distressing for everyone who knew them.

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 12:45

Thank you for all the input, I think that maybe I need to look into my relationship with food some more and another option for a way to eat that is good for my body and mind.
I really appreciate all the opinions.

Please watch the "Epitome of malnourishment" series of videos on Youtube... it's a compilation of clips from other video channels on fruitarians and raw vegans. They do no look healthy at all. Emaciated, gaunt, sunken eyes, very prematurely aged wrinkled skin, acne/skin problems, loose teeth - one guy even had a front tooth fly out while talking to the camera.

Can't see how it's sustainable either (unless you live somewhere like Thailand or Hawaii). Most fruit to the UK is shipped in huge containers ships, which have a massive carbon footprint. They're stored in massive warehouses, with high energy costs for refrigeration, lighting, gassed with chemicals to help them ripen (ethylene). An all round massive industrial and infrastructural footprint to bring food to your table, which means high fossil fuel use, mining, concrete, indentured labour in third world countries, pesticides, insecticides, huge demands on the local water table, depriving local people of their fundamental rights to a basic water supply etc etc.

Isn't it far better to eat local, seasonal food from your own bio-region with far fewer food miles?

That YouTube thing is awful. But it does imply that all vegans are malnourished and emaciated, which obviously isn't the case!
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 25/09/2021 13:58

Is that video about raw vegans or vegans in general? Clearly a lot of those people look unwell but that's not down to a vegan diet.

FreeBritnee · 25/09/2021 13:59

Extremely bad for your teeth. Please don’t do it.

OuiOuiBonjour · 25/09/2021 14:09

A girl from my school days has been a fruitarian for 23 years.

She's too ill to work. Weighs 5 and 1/2 stone, multiple vitamin deficiencies, her hair all fell out and grew back as thin tufts, nails snap off, constantly anaemic, lost periods totally several times and has never been pregnant, no muscle tone, can't exercise, is depressed, frequently gets oral and vaginal thrush from the sugar, blood sugars all over the place.

We all think she has an eating disorder or is mentally unwell around food. She's cut off anyone who suggests it may be the diet, even her Dad and siblings. It's ruined her life.

OuiOuiBonjour · 25/09/2021 14:09

Oh yeah, her teeth are awful. Yellow and rotted away.

WaltzingBetty · 25/09/2021 14:13

@SolitaryTree

Where will you get your RDA of protein, calcium, iron and B vitamins?

It is an eating disorder, it's called Orthorexia Nervosa.
LalalalalalaLand123 · 25/09/2021 14:18

It sounds extremely unhealthy.

Isn't it obvious that she's so unwell because she has an eating disorder and only eating fruit is a symptom of that? Being raw fruit vegan is a bad idea but it isn't in itself an eating disorder.
Appalonia · 25/09/2021 14:25

Your body needs fat and protein to function properly. Please don't do this.

OuiOuiBonjour · 25/09/2021 14:26

I think we will probably disagree on this. I think anyone who chooses to limit themelves to only one food group has an eating disorder. I do think all raw fruit vegans have a disordered attitude towards food and eating.

ThedaBara · 25/09/2021 14:52

The Unnatural Vegan on YouTube has covered the diets of people like freelee and fully raw Kristina to show exactly where the nutritional deficiencies are. Essentially it is possible to survive on a diet like this, but you absolutely have to include vitamin supplements and something like protein powder at a minimum. Also, all of these YouTubers seem to live in temperate climates. I can't think of anything more miserable than eating a watermelon for lunch in the middle of a typical British February

Freelee is no longer vegan.
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 25/09/2021 15:07

Freelee is no longer vegan.

Really?? Where did you read that?

lljkk · 25/09/2021 15:25

Lots of fruits are reasonably low sugar (eg courgettes, avocado).

But which fruits have plenty of iron or protein in them?

ShaneTheThird · 25/09/2021 15:52

To be fair I might be wrong about Freelee I know she took her channel in a different direction to veganism so it might just be rumours that she gave up veganism or it was taken out of context

SolitaryTree · 25/09/2021 17:07

@BahHumbygge I will watch that, thanks.
I’ve only watched the positive views on YouTube so far!
