Christmas Day Buffet ideas

This year we are not doing a traditional Christmas dinner, instead everyone is bringing food for a help yourself buffet. We have vegans, vegetarians and omnivores coming.

I would rather cook vegan food that would appeal to everyone.

I've found a vegan sausage roll recipe to try, and I'll do a coleslaw, but I would be interested in hearing other people's thoughts on what they would bring - sweet or savoury.

Nice vegan pâté(s), either with a selection of crackers or already spread on crisp bread with a garnish. www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/artichoke-bean-lemon-pate-recipe You’ll need to use a vegan hard cheese if you want to make this one. If you don’t want to make your own, Sainsbury’s has a couple of very nice vegan pâtés made by a company called VegRoot. I once made a chestnut and mushroom pâté but I can’t find the recipe.

Tofu skewers - two suggestions for recipes to follow: www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/recipes/a27492586/bbq-tofu-skewers/ and www.veganrecipeclub.org.uk/recipes/tofu-satay-skewers

I’ve made this trifle before but used Alpro custard instead of making my own www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/vegan-trifle-recipe Its worth it if you have the time to make it.

Bruschetta are popular and easy! Olive, or tomato or mushroom would be good.

A bowl of Padron peppers.

Vol au vents or pastry tart cases (I think Jus Roll do a vegan pastry) filled with ratatouille.

For a centrepiece a baked stuffed marrow.

Cous-cous with olives, cucumber etc.

ShetlandWife · 09/12/2019 18:22

Thank you both! I'm definitely using the pate idea (had been thinking if hummous, but we have that regularly) and doing bruschetta (why didn't I think of that!).

And I'm going to add the other ideas to the group chat in case someone else wants to take them on.

Are the omnivores happy to eat vegan food on Christmas Day? As a meat eater I would be utterly disappointed to eat a vegan buffet

ChikiTIKI · 09/12/2019 18:26

Bruschetta would d be great! I do eat meat but find Christmas gets way too meaty which is why I often go veggie for lent. Will see if I can think of anything. Olives always go down well!

Have to agree. I'd pretend otherwise, obviously, but I'd be gutted. I love a decent traditional Christmas dinner.

It doesn’t even have to be a Christmas dinner. Vegan food does not appeal to me whatsoever.

Helpful comments above seeing as it’s a vegan board Hmm

Bosh book has some good bits

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 09/12/2019 19:27

Forgot to add lots of pastries are vegan so some mini vegetable tarts and deliciously Ella has a recipe for mushroom & chestnut tarts which look lovely.

Squigean · 09/12/2019 19:31

A lentil pate is usually good as it's got a bit more substance to it than something like a mushroom pate, making it good to eat without bread

I've made one in the past but unfortunately it's vegetarian, (though there must be lots of other ones available!) I'll dig it out and see if it's adaptable

I made vegan spinach artichoke dip for a dinner with vegans which was pleasant.

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2019 19:59

Most shop puff pastry is vegan. Mushroom (or some other) wellington would make a great centrepiece. Or an onion tarte tatin.
Plus homemade cranberry sauce to make it Christmassy.
I don’t know if it fits with the rest, but the cauliflower wings in the bosh book are to die for.

ChikiTIKI · 09/12/2019 20:56

An idea for a sweet pudding... Pineapple cut in to sticks, rolled in sugar and cinnamon and gridled, with some dark rum poured over. Served with coconut ice cream.

ShetlandWife · 09/12/2019 22:30

I don't think I said anywhere it would be exclusively vegan, did I?

But I'm not going to come on this board and ask for non vegan suggestions. I mean, how ridiculous would that be!

Look up Bosh Christmas tree sharer too for a lovely centre piece - spotted that when planning my own buffet last night Smile
