Christmas Day starters

What's everyone having?

Normally do soup but I'm thinking of doing something different, maybe a terrine or something. Children are having melon (I've bought a melon baller!) and will be beyond delighted to get to have "dessert" first.

I made a delicious mushroom and chestnut pate last year that I served with toasted sourdough. I’ll try and find the recipe, it was so easy too.

I haven’t decided yet, but here’s my shortlist!
Spiced chickpea cakes with coriander salad
Cauliflower samosas with mango salsa
Tomato and avocado bruschetta
Carrot ribbon salad with pomegranate and quinoa granola
Sun dried tomato and butterbean pate
Stuffed portobello mushrooms with vegan cheese alternative

Never bother with a starter but if we did, I think I'd just do melon with Port, or small portions of soup. Or just a salad - maybe roasted squash and puy lentils with a few leaves.

Homemade artichoke dip, and mushroom dip, with crunchy garlic\dried herby toast, serve on a bed of lettuce and endive. I make and freeze it all (not the salad obvs.) approx a week before. Is very popular!

Think I'm going to go for a mushroom pate - I like the idea of subbing in chestnuts, that feels quite festive! Maybe with a rocket and fennel salad. Mmm!

Sorry OP but I wouldn’t put rocket and fennel together in a salad - the flavours would really clash! Fennel goes really well with fresh orange though Smile

Having said that, if you’re serving pate for a starter I’d forego the salad and just make sure your bread is delicious and rustic and that there’s not so much of it that you fill your guests up before the main.
