Hello all.

My husband is newly dairy free and I am looking for a cheese substitute that melts (the grated one we brought absolutely doesn't 😁.

Violife mozarella. It's great!

Peoplemaynoticeus · 05/09/2018 19:17

Violife pizza or violife original. The nicest cheese is follow your heart smoked gouda

NameChange30 · 05/09/2018 19:19

Mozzarisella is great on pizzas. It’s the cheese they use at places like Zizzis (which has a great vegan / dairy free menu btw) and Pizza Express I think.

Violife is ok but I got a bit sick of it!

Some of the supermarkets do own brand cheese substitutes which aren’t too bad, can’t remember which I’m afraid, but it could be worth trying a few.

Thank you so much!
We have Asda grated which he likes the taste of but that does not melt even if you nuke it 😂

Daiya from sainsburys, quite expensive but it’s the best supermarket one I’ve had.

Loyaultemelie · 16/09/2018 10:48

Another vote for Daiya!

LauraMipsum · 16/09/2018 23:07

None of them. Have at least 6 months off cheese altogether, ideally a year, and then you'll find that the vegan cheeses no longer taste of nausea and disappointment.

Mostly.

Apart from that fake parmesan which made my fridge smell like farts for a fortnight.

I can now tolerate violife slices and occasional sheese. The only one I've found which is actually pleasant is Nutcrafter Creamery but I only get that at Christmas because it's so expensive.

QuantumPixies · 16/09/2018 23:10

I’m amazed people rate Violife. I bought some and it tastes like feet.

I still haven’t found any I like although I have eaten in vegan cafes and had things containing cheese so there must be some that are ok.

TeddyIsaHe · 16/09/2018 23:11

No-Moo melty. I’m not even vegan and I eat it willingly, it makes the best cheese sauce ever.

PlatypusPie · 16/09/2018 23:23

Indeed. After double wrapping and then sealing in an airtight container.

I am dairy free because it triggers my eczema and long for real cheese. My DD, with a strong intolerance, has worked her way through everything she can find on the market and has some she likes but I am unsuccessful. I have sometimes liked at first bite but then a back taste comes through and I am defeated again.

I have tried to think of them as not ‘non- cheese’ but a savoury item but still fail

Sorry, OP - that wasn’t helpful ! Hope your DH does find something.

kikisparks · 17/09/2018 08:31

Nutcrafter is amazing but it’s not cheap, you might find it in health food shops.

Artesia · 16/10/2018 20:16

Am late to the party, but I second mozerisella- i tried all the others and found them horrendous, but then had vegan pizza at Zizi and pizza express and made it my mission to track down the cheese they use! I now have a stock of it in the freezer and my dairy free son is thrilled to bits that he can have lovely pizza with his brothers. My local health food shop ordered it and gave a good discount when I ordered in bulk.

Nemesia · 16/10/2018 20:22

Asda cheese melts a bit better in the microwave. If you put it in the oven then it melts best if it is mixed with either soya milk first or sprayed with oil (this helps it melt).

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 16/10/2018 20:24

Kinda Co vegan cheese is amazing and they used to do a melty mozzarella style one, but it's tricky to get hold of if you're not in London

Nemesia · 16/10/2018 20:33

Also if you can't get hold of mozrisella then violife cream cheese on pizza is a good sub.

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 23:41

Do not get the sainsburys own coconut one, it's disgusting

KingIrving · 29/10/2018 06:35

Can I please share with you my recipe for vegan parmesan, super easy, quite nice and doesn't smell bad:
1 cup cashew
3 heaped tablespoons nutritional yeast
1 tblspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt.

Blend all together and enjoy. Don't ask me how long you can keep it in fridge, because every time I do it, DH eats it with a spoon straight from the jar and it is usually gone in a day
