Cashews!

Where do people buy their cashews from? They’re so useful for making cheeses/spreads/creamy sauces, I love them in stir fries and for snacks. But they’re so bloody expensive! The best price I’ve found recently was actually in Sainsbury’s worked out about £14/kg, similar to my local Indian supermarket. I’ve not found anywhere online that beats that but wondered if anyone else knew of anywhere?

Often the Asian shops sells large bags at a reasonable price.

I buy mine from Aldi - not sure of price but I'm sure cheaper than £14/kg. They have 2 different packets - 1 which is like smart price and one which have bigger nuts

Lidl.

Tesco wholefood cashews are £11/kg.

Bizarrely they have another own branding which are £13.75/kg

Aldi are £1.29 for 150g which is the cheapest I’ve found.

Mookatron · 05/04/2018 13:15

Sainsburys' are cheaper in the 'world food' aisle - the Fudco brand - but I'm guessing you know this.

If you watch this video you can see why they're so expensive! I'm not being holy-than-thou I just find it fascinating! I love cashews.

Can’t believe I didn’t think of Lidl/Aldi!!!

Thanks for the video, very interesting isn’t it. Definitely worth the expense. Wish they weren’t so yummy/useful!

Go to a large Indian cash and carry and buy them broken or loose if possible; works out far cheaper.

Glug44 · 05/04/2018 21:21

I get mine (plus Almonds, Walnuts etc) for £8/9 for a kilo. But I travel 10 miles to an Indian C&C to get them.

Asda do a 600g bag for £6 so £10/kg

I have a Grape Tree shop near me...£11.99 per kilo. They also do mail order.

Sainsbury's sell cashew pieces which work out cheaper than the fudco ones

There is a lot of human cruelty involved in cashews, particularly in Vietnam where they are harvested by prisoners.

I love cashews and use them lots, I try to buy fair trade ones or at least avoid Vietnamese ones. It's still less expensive than my former cheese habit!
