Butter replacement

DD and I are making the move towards being vegan. We're struggling with butter though as neither of us like margarine.

Can anyone suggest a buttery-tasting vegan margarine for us? Thank you x

Im not that keen on any of them but use pure sunflower or vitalite. I used to like tesco coconut spread but they dont seem to sell it any more.I was given a recipe for vegan "butter" once which was basically half coconut oil half olive oil and a pinch of salt. Mix well and put in fridge. It was nice but not cheap.

Thanks mysterious. I'll give the sunflower a try. I'm not sure I'm ready to make my own yet!

Pure is ok. But there are cheaper sunflower spreads. I think they're nice - you get used them too after using them for a while.

They aren't the margarines of our childhood! I bought some Stork recently just to try it for nostalgia purposes and it was a bit erm, grim.

And good on you for moving towards vegan btw.

My favourite is vitalite. It also works really well in vegan baking as a replacement for butter.

Another vote for Pure sunflower here. Versatile and a pretty good texture/taste. It's definitely one of the better ones.
The trick is not comparing it to butter in your mind as no vegan spread is ever going to win. You do get used to it I promise!

The next challenge is to find a decent vegan spread with no palm oil Hmm
Still working on that one...

whiteroseredrose · 14/01/2018 22:19

Thanks Lineys. I think we'll end up working our way through them till we find the one we like best. That's how we selected Alpro soya light.

We've decided to switch things bit by bit and not be obsessive. We've been veggie a long time so it's a natural progression.

I imagine if half the world was vegan half the week, it would be a very different place.

The flora dairy free is excellent.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/01/2018 21:35

Indeed lineys. If enough people hugely reduced their consumption of animal products, eg by 80/90%, demand would be a lot less and the animals we did need could be reared in much better conditions because we wouldn't need so much meat and dairy and for it to be affordable. Better for the environment too.

I use coconut oil on bread , rice cakes etc, or I keep olive oil in a Tupperware in the fridge, so it is solid. It's really good on bread.

Have now bought Pure sunflower and DD and I tried it this morning. Not bad. Not as delicious as butter but never mind. It's neutral rather than awful which is a start.

Vitalite is our fave. :)
