Eating on holiday

Can anyone give me tips on eating abroad. I am off to Crete and whilst we are self catering which gives me a lot of flexibility I still want to be able to eat out. What do I ask for, how do I explain my diet? I've been Vegan for only 7 months so this is my first trip abroad and it's was quite difficult as a vegetarian before! (Although I have never been to Greece). Hints and tips most gratefully received

Oooh you should have lots of lovely things in Create - dolmades, Hummus, salads etc. Look online and find out the phrase for "no meat or dairy" and just stick to that. Whenever I go away I tend to stick to chips and salad if I'm unsure!

If you google "vegan in ----" you'll probably find a blog highlighting tips & key phrases for wherever you're going. Some even recommend restaurants!

Is there a ferry to Thessaloniki? Might be a mission to get there but there's an amazing new vegan restaurant just started or about to open any minute now called the elephant in the room. Incredible drinks! She's lovely and you could contact her for more local to you recommendations.

It's about 900km from Crete to Thessaloniki do not exactly a day trip Grin

As well as the suggestions above you could have Greek salad without the feta, perhaps with some hummus on the side for protein.

Download the happy cow app for your phone!

Was also going to suggest Happy Cow, if that covers Crete. Also worth joining a group like UK Vegan on FB (if you use it) and ask for recommendations from fellow vegans who have been there.
