AtlantaGinandTonic · 28/04/2017 10:36

Choc chip hobnobs are vegan but dark choc chip hobnobs aren't!

AtlantaGinandTonic · 28/04/2017 15:44

Pretty much all McCain chips are vegan. The only exceptions are the gluten-free ones.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 28/04/2017 15:44

Tesco crumpets are vegan!

Destinysdaughter · 28/04/2017 15:47

I thought veganism was supposed to be healthy, this is just a list of junk food!

hazelnutlatte · 28/04/2017 15:56

Re cross contamination issue - I can't see how any vegans can avoid this, unless your kitchen at home is entirely vegan, plus when you eat out you only buy from entirely vegan restaurants, and only buy products from entirely vegan companies.

hazelnutlatte · 28/04/2017 16:00

Oops posted before I added my accidentally vegan find - belvita Chico hazelnut breakfast tops are vegan but do unfortunately contain palm oil

Whatslovegottodo · 28/04/2017 16:12

destinys it is just a lifestyle/ diet that doesn't use animal products!

It can be as healthy or unhealthy as you like. I know people who are vegan eat all raw fresh food and ones who live on crisps and soy burgers.
I eat 80 %healthy (fresh, home cooked, lots of veg) and 20% junk/ processed/ treat. Same as a lot of my omni friends really but I'd guess my diet is lower in saturated fat, sugar, and generally has more fruit and veg.

Each to their own.

Crunchyside · 28/04/2017 16:19

I thought veganism was supposed to be healthy, this is just a list of junk food! That's because it's a thread about products you wouldn't automatically expect to be vegan. Everyone knows that fruit, vegetables, legumes etc are a) vegan and b) healthy. It's the unhealthy, sugary, fatty treats like biscuits, cakes etc that tend to contain dairy products so that explains why this is a list of junk food Smile

WellyNelly · 28/04/2017 16:36

If you are trying to eat ethically, how can you justify eating all this crap processed food? Many of these items contain palm oil which is one of the most unethical ingredients out there.

Eating ethically is a complex matter - it's more than just giving yourself a pat on the back for cutting out animal products. If you truly care about animals then you would be concerned about the effect of palm oil production on rainforest environments and you wouldn't touch Jus Rol, Hobnobs, Oreos, Biscoff or half the other foods on this thread.

Whatslovegottodo · 28/04/2017 17:02

wellynelly we are all doing what we can.

I am also fairly sure you are not eating a vegan diet consisting solely of home grown carrots and apples!
It is all about doing your best.

I'm guessing you aren't even vegan and therefore have a huge carbon and ethical footprint.
If you are a raw, organic vegan who eats only locally sourced products then I applaud you.
But the average vegan diet is miles better than the average omnivorous diet for the planet and by everyone taking some steps is far better than people being put off doing what they can by having criticism for eating a party ring Hmm.
People are vegan for all sorts of reasons - health / ethical / animals / planet.
Veganism massively cuts your carbon/ nitrous oxide footprint(reducing climate change) saves water, saves energy.

I don't know why people come onto these threads to make these remarks it's pretty unfair criticising people who aren't just trying their best (on a board called 'vegan' so not even 'ramming it down your throat' as is so often said should anyone mention then'v' word!!) let people try and makes some small changes if everyone did that it would equal a huge change.

WhereHaveYouGinAllMyLife · 28/04/2017 17:18

Tesco's frozen chocolate and hazelnut churros are vegan and I also saw some frozen Cajun spiced sweet potato slices which I think are vegan.

hazelnutlatte · 28/04/2017 17:30

Well said whatslove. And back on topic - Elizabeth shaw mint crisps, bendicks bittermints and various supermarket own brand after eights - can you tell I like mint chocolate?

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/04/2017 17:31

Vegan Churros? OMFG!!!

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 28/04/2017 17:31

Me too Hazelnut Smile

hazelnutlatte · 28/04/2017 17:33

Also someone earlier in the thread said cool dorito's - sadly they are not vegan as they contain cheese powder, but the chilli heatwave flavour are fine.
Would love to hear about any junk food snacks that don't contain palm oil - I do try to avoid it for the most part, but it seems to be in everything!

My3littlestars · 28/04/2017 18:16

Wormulonian · 29/04/2017 11:40

www.veganwomble.co.uk/wordpress/vegan-biscuits-uk/

Extensive list of vegan biscuits. I love Rakusen's chocolate digestives but sadly Ocado have stopped stocking them. Sad

WellyNelly · 29/04/2017 12:27

@Whatslovegottodo - not sure why I need to justify my actions to a stranger on the Internet, but my family are, in fact, vegan. OH and I scrupulously evaluate where our food comes from and try to make ethical choices across everything we eat.

I'll not be back on this thread as I can see that it's not really a place for this kind of discussion. I understand that people are "trying to do their best". I just think that being pedantic about the possibility of finding traces of animal products in all of these processed foods whilst completely disregarding the enormous harm that palm oil does to the environment (and especially the harm done to orangutan habitats) is a contraction, and something that perhaps many pp were not aware of. Sorry to have ruffled feathers. I'll leave you all to enjoy your ready made puff pastry and your hobnobs Wink

Wormulonian · 29/04/2017 12:54
