Can anyone suggest some really good Edinburgh restaurants for a special Birthday dinner?

Thanks!

I had the best meal of my life here. It's pricey, but it's really special.

Cafe St. Honore is lovely too.

I spent the weekend of my 30th birthday in Edinburgh and one night went to the Tower restaurant www.tower-restaurant.com/ and the following night to The Witchery by the Castle www.thewitchery.com/. Both were really lovely - but it was 5 years ago so can't vouch for what they'd be like now. I would love to go back!

I spent my wedding night in the Witchery nearly 15 years ago!

The witchery is truly wonderful. They have some apartments you can rent out i believe as well, should you be interested!

hf128219 · 18/06/2010 14:41

Cross posts! They are wonderful!

Another vote for the Witchery - it's very dramatic and the food - divine!

fluffles · 18/06/2010 14:52

the witchery or the tower are good

rhubarb is lovely though very expensive

martin wishart is fantastic though very very expensive

lunch at rhubarb or martin wishart is still a big treat but a bit more affordable. also if you drive and don't drink you can appreciate the food more and maybe avoid the second mortgage!

The Witchery gets some mixed reviews.

I like the look of Martin Wishart.

We had our wedding lunch at Cafe St honore. It was in 2003 though, and haven't been for years.

Also have been to the Witchery, and tbh I didn't see what the fuss was about. don't get me wrong, it was very nice, but overpriced.

But, I haven't been for a posh meal in years, so don't have any current recommendations.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/06/2010 08:43

was at Cafe St Honore a few weeks ago and the food was the best I have ever had there.

Try 21212 www.21212restaurant.co.uk really different , absolutely delicious and a lovely dining experience.
We went in March this year and it was really good-If your treating yourselves they also have lovely rooms in the townhouse too.

Oloroso is fabulous for a city centre restaurant. I've been to the Witchery - restaurant and hotel (got engaged the same night, swoon) but actually wasn't all that impressed with the food there, I had to send the main course back as the salmon was still frozen in the middle!

Also recommend Martin Wishart in Leith.

liath · 26/06/2010 21:57

Number 1 at the Balmoral is very very good.

Have had disappointing meals at the Tower and Rhubarb but this was years ago. I made the mistake of ordering nettle soup at Rhubarb - yeuch!

mummytomyprincess · 27/06/2010 08:35

The Witchery was very disappointing - had gone for our wedd anniversary and like I said excellent service, not much atmosphere as tables all very, very close and everyone was speaking very quietly, wine list extensive read like a bible but food very average not as we expected.

I wouldnt personally go again

21212 is amazing - DH and I had a fantastic meal there in December.

Get there early, have drinks in the lounge, then great food. Yum!

Tootlesmummy · 27/06/2010 08:58

I wouldn't go to the Witchery, a bit over priced for what it is.

Martin Wishart is lovely and I'd also try the Vinters Rooms/The Vaults as well.

dizietsma · 27/06/2010 09:03

There's a great Thai place in Newington- Celadon.

meep · 27/06/2010 09:14

Rhubarb at Prestonfield House is very special - amazing setting - peacocks strutting in the grounds and food is pretty good.

mummytomyprincess · 27/06/2010 09:54

oh also the Brittania Spice was terrible aswell!
