We're taking our boys, 4 and 6, to the Roman Wall this summer. Which are the best places to take children this age? Official tourist bumpf which has just arrived not very illuminating!

Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum have a dual package. You can see actual digs at Vindolanda and there's a lot of the excavated fort to look at, plus some reconstructions. Nice coffee shop too and the museum part is great.

In between the two there's a section of wall at Cawfields that would be easy enough for your boys.

Some of the sites like Arbeia in South Shields have a programme of events like Meet A Roman Soldier etc which your boys might like. It's worth looking at the websites for individual locations to see what's on over the summer.

Housesteads is also good. Top tip if you are staying near the wall is to buy a one week ticket for the National Park car parks dotted along the wall. The view at Steel Riggs is great. Not much for children at Birdoswald.

Thank you. That's very helpful. I would love to take them for a little walk along the wall, so it's nice to know there's a bit we can do.

Oooooh, can we come with you. Went to Northumberland for the first time (well except for 2 previous trips to Newcastle for GNR & a spell on Otterburn Training Area - don't ask) last year with DS (was nearly 7) and loved it. Spent one week on the coast and one week right beside Hadrian's Wall (near Steel Riggs), can't wait to go back especially as I have discovered this dog friendly self catering beside Vindolanda!
