Never been there. Should we?

In particular...

Scarborough or Whitby? or somewhere else. By the coast would be nice.

What eles to do (apartfrom gazing at dales) should be done there.

Scarborough's quite nice, I think.

We went on holiday to scarborough when I was 14 - not a good age. Me and my brother spent most of our holiday money going to fortune-tellers. There seemed to be one on every street corner.

Flamingoland good.

aw littlepushka i didnt know your were in yorkshire....im from York. live a stones throw away now in a (not very nice) part of east yorkshire, one day, when ive got my feet under the table in the police i would like to transfer back to North Yorks and move...im very of you living near dalby forest!

hope you enjoy your stay eccentrica!

LittlePushka · 14/04/2010 23:41

Evening Vicar!! I used to live (and work) in York when I moved from the NE- DH is a Yorkie! You know that you would be very welcome to call in for a cuppa next time you are on the forest drive...(in civvies or uniform)

Eccentrica, York is a great place to visit too...Natinal Railway Museum is FAB and free!! in fact if you stayed somewhere around Malton/pickering as a base then you could have a hundred or more great places to see in less than three quarters of an hours drive.

ThatVikRinA22 · 14/04/2010 23:49

small world pushka! thats very kind of you, may well take you up on that one fine day! (Yorkshire Tea ?!!)

piprabbit · 14/04/2010 23:58

I'm off to Scarborough for my holiday this year - found a good deal on a house on North Bay and will use it as a base for all sorts of trips as well as (finger crossed) some beach time for the DCs.

I'm going to watch this thread, so I can find it again when I'm planning what to do in more detail.

LittlePushka · 15/04/2010 00:00

Of course,...and a massive slice of DH's killer chocolate cake

Hijack over,..as you were team...!

LittlePushka · 15/04/2010 00:07

piprabbit,...good on you! Enjoy and come back and enlighten the Scarboroughphobes!

Tortington · 15/04/2010 00:08

they lost the war

long live the house of Lancaster.

red rose rules

BeenBeta · 15/04/2010 08:41

Don't mention the war!

The more recent renaming of Cleveland and Humberside is also still far too sensitive a topic to discuss in polite circles.

[Yorkshire git emoticon]

LittlePushka · 15/04/2010 15:59

Piprabbit & Eccentrica...forgot to mention "Whitby Wizard", near the local authority car park between the swimming pool and the cliff lift. Great little place full of hands on examples of physics. REally worth a visit. Whitby is about 20 or 25 mins drive up the coast from scarborough Piprabbit.

piprabbit · 15/04/2010 17:14

Thanks for the tip LittlePushka

ThatVikRinA22 · 15/04/2010 21:55

i can report that Humberside is no more - it was officially done away with about 10 years ago in favour of East Yorkshire! so humberside is no more. bloody confusing for the post even now.

weluvhols · 18/04/2010 18:58

Scarborough is a wonderful place - I love it due to wonderful memories of childhood hols there. No one is too young or old to enjoy the bracing walk around the Marine Drive, followed by an icecream from the Harbour Bar!

We have always found it a great base for coastal walks - Robin Hood's bay, RSPB Bempton cliffs. Eden camp war museum near Pickering v reasonable and great for teenagers I would think. Flamingoland was pricey and busy last time we went. We have been to the area lots of times and always find new things to do.

piprabbit · 09/08/2010 22:02

Just got back from my Scarborough holiday and wanted to let you all know that we had a great time.

North Bay has a gorgeous beach. The DCs loved Peasholm Park and the naval battle, but really went mad about the little steam train that runs along North Bay.

Scarborough Castle had real live knights fighting with swords (v. thrilling for DCs).

The National Railway Museum was great for my DH and Thomas-obsessed 2yo DS. And my DD enjoyed the children's lecture on the scientific principles behind powering trains (including barbie dolls being shot from a stream cannon). And it's free Grin.

Ryedale Folk Museum kept us all entertained, DCs loved exploring the different historic houses in the beautifully kept 4 acre site.

We could probably have kept ourselves entertained for a fortnight, instead of the week we had.

Many thanks for all the suggestions.

LittlePushka · 09/08/2010 22:17

GrinHow lovely to hear that piprabbit! I am happy that you loved it! I am very proud of it (which is a huge thing as I was kidnapped here from the Geordie Nation many moons since)!

Did you make it onto the North York Moors Railway from pickering? If not then next time!!!

piprabbit · 09/08/2010 22:47

Oh yes.... Pickering to Grosmont. Very good and lovely cheap grub in the Grosmont tearoom.

piprabbit · 09/08/2010 22:48

And it was so green and lush everywhere.
Makes Darn Sarf look like tired and arid.

LittlePushka · 09/08/2010 23:28

I agree - you can almost smell the grass growing at this time of year! Grosmont station cafe cakes..mmm! It is so nice to hear that you loved all these things - I do them with my boys all the time.Grin mostly it is great that you came to holiday and loved it, when this area (unjustifiably) gets a bad press compared to York and the Dales. Did you have to travel far?

piprabbit · 10/08/2010 09:14

Just up from Essex - but stopped overnight near Doncaster because I really wanted to visit Brodsworth Hall and gardens and to make the trip a bit easier on my 2yo.

LittlePushka · 10/08/2010 17:17

Respect! Grin

EccentricaGallumbits · 10/08/2010 17:22

Glad you enjoyed your holiday LittleP. We're going in a week. Can't wait.

Am just going to read back and make a list of what to do.

FYI Scarborough has had a lot of money spent on it recently, and it's much nicer than it used to be!

Whitby is a nice idea, but very small, very cramped and not really geared up to families with small children.

The rest of Yorkshire is lovely - plenty to do in the cities, and if you like nice scenery then the Dales or the Moors are lovely.

It's a BIG place though, so make sure you research a visit fully. Loads of great museums, many of which are free - Royal Armouries in Leeds, National Coal Mining museum in Wakefield, National Railway Museum in York etc.

I am biased, I live here, and it's great - even when we go away we still stay in Yorkshire.

EccentricaGallumbits · 10/08/2010 17:33

sorry - pip on holiday not littlep.
