Never been there. Should we?

In particular...

Scarborough or Whitby? or somewhere else. By the coast would be nice.

What eles to do (apartfrom gazing at dales) should be done there.

RHB is v.nice.

Yorkshire is HUGE!!

Whitby also nice.

N.Yorks nicest IMO.

unavailable · 12/04/2010 17:56

Scarborough - not nice
Whitby - quaint but v busy in summer
R'hoods bay - very steep hill to village from car park
Staithes - v like R'hoods bay
Lovely smaller places along the coast - runswick bay, boggle hole, sandsend...
Inland its moors rahter than dales. To enjoy the area, you should really like hiking, walking or cycling. Its all about the scenery really.

RooBear · 12/04/2010 18:01

I'm from the North Yorkshire dales so I'm very biased! but I'd say Whitby was nicer than scarborough, RHB is nice x

Hulababy · 12/04/2010 18:06

Whitby is lovely.

Loads and loads to do around the North Yorks area. We have often had a few das or a week away there.

jumpingjackhash · 12/04/2010 18:09

My grandparents used to take me to Scarborough for a week every summer when I was little... loved it at the time but I probably wouldn't now! Whitby is nicer but there are some beautiful spots further inland too.

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/04/2010 18:32

sounds very tempting - apart from the pissing rain - but then i'm a bit welsh so used to that.

I went to Scarborough every year when I was little - I hate it. Its always cold and there really isn't much to do.

Whitby is lovely - but busy.

Robin Hoods Bay is lovely but steep - I think alot of people us it as a base to travel around.

If you like scenery and villages etc its a lolvely area. If you like to be near towns etc maybe not.

deaddei · 12/04/2010 18:57

Saltaire near Shipley is one of my fave places= David Hockney owned mill with fab art, books etc.
Coxwold, Helmsley, Rieveux Abbey- all gorgeous.
The Star Inn at Harome- a restaurant to die for,

displayuntilbestbefore · 12/04/2010 19:01

It's lovely and there is a lot to do to please everyone. If you go to the Scarborough/Whitby area you've got Bempton Cliffs RSPB, Sewerby House and Gardens, the model village, Peasholm Park, Filey nature reserve, York not too far away, the steam railway on top of all the lovely walks....so much to do you won't be able to fit it all into one visit!

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/04/2010 19:08

scarborough is actually nice, plenty to do, nice walks, decent enough beach for kids, the sea life centre is there, peasholm park, whitby is a bit more "upmarket", i prefer whitby with older kids but not as much to do to keep young 'uns entertained. a few days has always been enough at either place for me. i live fairly near and used to go alot when i lived in York.

when i go to scarborough we always go the scenic route and stop in Dalby forest. thats lovely and worth a visit.

if your going for a few days there is loads more to do around and about, so worth looking at other days out nearby.

robin hoods bay is quiet and very quaint. nice though.

if youve got kids that need things to do scarborough is good.

elliepac · 12/04/2010 19:09

I think it is a lovely area. We often go on holiday there, staying on the Moors because it's beautiful and venturing to the coast for days out. Scarborough is a bit commercialised for my liking (although you may like that, horses for courses and all that..keeps children amused on a wet day), lots of arcades, bingo halls etc on the seafront, beach is very child friendly though. Whitby is lovely although super crowded on a summers day. Robin Hood's Bay is a beautiful quaint seaside town although haven't been for a while as have DC's in pushchairs and there is a massive hill into the village. I really like Filey as it is a lot quieter and the beach is lovely (plus used to go there as a child, so fond memories). There are lots of lovely little towns on the Moors and lots of things to do. Pickering is nice and the North York Moors Steam Railway is a good day out. Inland there are also places such as Eden Camp (WW2 outdoor museum type place) and Flamingoland for the days when weather not so nice and as someone has already mentioned Castle Howard is a good day out.

MamaGlee · 12/04/2010 19:10

I always feel grubby when I've been to scarborough

If you're in the Ripon area, Fountains abbey and Newby Hall gardens are lovely. Moving west, Bolton abbey, walk along the Wharfe to the Strid - and lots more good wharfedale walks.

Lots to do in York if the weather is bad - Jorvik, Castle Museum, cathedral, train museum.

moulesfrites · 12/04/2010 19:15

We went for a week last year and stayed in a log cabin near Pickering, did the old rilway journey to Whitby and had a day out there, lots to see, go to the Magpie cafe for lunch, climb up to the Abbey, mooch around the shops etc. Also did Castle Howard and lovely walled gardens at Scrampston (??), Lovely villages to explore eg Malton etc.

displayuntilbestbefore · 12/04/2010 19:18

MamaGlee - you must be seeking out the less favourable parts of Scarborough
I think Scarborough's ok tbh - lots to do and see, you can easily avoid the tacky amusement arcades if they aren't your bag - there are loads of things for children to enjoy.
Some beautiful architecture around..and don't forget the vernacular railway which is an interesting few seconds and it gets you away from the tacky south beach asap

elliemental · 12/04/2010 19:32

I want to stick up for poor old scarborough - stick to NorthBay, no amusement arcades, just rainbow coloured chalets, donkey rides and nice sandy beaches, with a little train from Dear old peasholm park to the sea life centre. Nice pub opp sea life centre with a bridge leading to cliff top walk. We often drive round the marine drive to south bay to ogle at the smelly people in vulgar clothing and have an ice cream at the wonderfully kitsch 1950s ice cream parlour.

Agree with everything else - RHB my fav place.
Adore Whitby but it can be a nightmare in high summer (crowded).

How old are your dc?

displayuntilbestbefore · 12/04/2010 19:36

"We often drive round the marine drive to south bay to ogle at the smelly people in vulgar clothing"

I enjoy trips to Scarborough TBH and DCs love driving along the north beach off-season when the wind sends the waves over the railings!

EccentricaGallumbits · 12/04/2010 19:39

DDs will be 12 and 14 by then. We like quiet, (well, DD1 likes shops and shopping and clothes but tough) like walking. don't mind hills, like nice beaches, ice cream and chips. DH likes trains. I like Dracula and have a bit of a secret Goth streak. DD2 doesn't like anything (but has inherited thesecret goth streak).

elliemental · 12/04/2010 19:39

oh yy display - we LOVE parking up by that lovely little cafe (cafe del mar?) and sitting with nice coffees or a little stubbie and watching the waves when the tide comes in.

The art galley is nice for an hour or so in the holidays - they always have crafty activities on too.

Course, the main attraction for ds1 is Hairy Bob's Skate Park now.....

displayuntilbestbefore · 12/04/2010 19:40

You'll be in Seventh Heaven around the North Yorkshire coast then!

JaynieB · 12/04/2010 19:42

Check and see if the 'Forbidden Garden' is open - well worth a visit, especially if you can avoid busy times. Lots of fun.
