Never been there. Should we?

In particular...

Scarborough or Whitby? or somewhere else. By the coast would be nice.

What eles to do (apartfrom gazing at dales) should be done there.

yorkshire is great and also is huge with lots to do to suit many different tastes. agree pretty much with what everyone else has said apart from about Scarborough being grubby , but i am allowed to fight scarborough's corner as was born and brought up there (i live in York now though, make of that what you will! )

cktwo · 12/04/2010 20:31

Scarborough is great. What about Leeds for shopping and theatre and eating out?
Bradford for the Media museum and a great curry.
If you want great dining then The Angel Inn at Cracoe or The Devonshire Fell at Burnsall is great. In fact Burnsall is lovely in summer - BBQs and ice cream in big field next to river.

jumpingjackhash · 13/04/2010 09:03

Elliemental - you've just reminded me about peasholm park! Is there still a fairy island walk there and warship re-enactments?

RooBear · 13/04/2010 10:53

agree with Jaynieb forbidden garden is great for families, if your DH is into trains take him to the National Railway Museum in York. I'm astonished how many people come here for holiday though, I guess when its on your doorstep everyday you forget its charms! think I better start exploring it again myself!

dotty2 · 13/04/2010 12:03

Peasholm Park - war-ship re-enactment yes, fairy walk - sadly, no. That's one of my happiest childhood memories. It was so magical (but I did lead a sheltered life and only ever went to Scarborough for holidays so my standards were low). Still a nice place for a row boat on the lake, though.

elliemental · 13/04/2010 12:44

the north york moors steam railway from Pickering is a lovely day out and you can get an explorer ticket and stop off and mooch along the way.
(our favourite joke. Do you like Pickering? I don't know, I've never pickered....Boom Boom.''

elliemental · 13/04/2010 12:45

you could hire bikes and explore Danby forest.
Or do the (expensive but fairly awesome) Go Ape thingy!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 13/04/2010 12:52

I love Yorkshire
I can vouch for here then venture to scarborough, whitby, grosmont to pickering railway
I grew up in Scarborough and if you stay away from the arcades on the sea front then it is lovely. (on the other hand an afternoon on the penny pushers and slot machines is fun)

EccentricaGallumbits · 13/04/2010 17:28

I have booked. hurrah!

now need a good book. rough guide don't do one.

oooh I saw this the other day.

Wnated to agree with many - Whitby very quaint and cute but town (east side) very busy in summer hols. I use to live in Whitby.

Still nice for a visit. Do yr DDs do beaches? prob not if 12 and 14. Wqalks on N York moors lovely and very empty (unlike Derbyshire Dales near where I now live).

Not so much to do indoors but yr DC are old enough for that not to matter.

What there isn't is lots of facilities (swimming pools, cinema etc) but the scenery cliff etc excellent.

I like Staithes and Saltburn too as scenic towns. Steam railway is fun.

Clary · 13/04/2010 17:36

sorry about awful typos. Fingers cold!

It never gets very hot in Whitby even if hot elsewhere in country. Also sea is blardy freezing and I speak as one who always goes in sea on holiday! much colder than Wales or Cornwall.

Where are you staying eccentrica? Then our collective wisdom can tell you the Must Dos.

elliemental · 13/04/2010 18:48

there is basic indoor pool in both scarborough and Whitby or if you wanted to drive to York (35 miles but sloooow roads) there is a 'leisure' pool with slides and waves and that.
Also a cinema in scarbro, and multiplex in York.

elliemental · 13/04/2010 18:49

Where are you staying? feel free to CAT me eccentrica, if you want specific info about things, I do know area pretty well, including some v nice eateries in whitby.

missyfafa · 13/04/2010 18:58

I'm from Yorkshire, Whitby is just lovely, so is Robin Hoods Bay, the moors are beautiful too. Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham are pretty little villages. York is wonderful and plenty to do and see. If you want to go further up the coast Staithes is very nice. Just for everyone's in fo, it's been really warm here and not pissing it down as someone said earlier. ;)

BexJ78 · 13/04/2010 19:31

Yes, just to second missyfafa it has indeed been pretty warm here of late. Hope you have a good holiday here!

Clary · 13/04/2010 19:32

Yes there is a cinema in Scarbor, but it's not very good (or wasn't!)

I just meant if you need quick fix wet weather stuff, Whitby can fail you a bit.

lol missyfafa about warm weather! I liveed there for 2 years tho and only once did the temp in Whitby itself get above 25C. That was when the rest of the country was groaning under 30Ctemps!! (not that you go on holiday in England for hot weather anyway )

elliemental · 14/04/2010 10:56

I am feeling ridiculously protective towards scarborough at the mo (probably relief that we are not living there )
we are back there at the weekend visiting the rellies.

BexJ78 · 14/04/2010 19:16

Elliemental, are you from scarb? i am too. just wondered if we might have known each other in a previous life?!

BeenBeta · 14/04/2010 19:31

My parents live near Scarborough. Its a bit grimey and grim and fullof expensive gaudy tat. Whitby nicer as are places liek Robin Hoods Bay.

There is also aplace called Boggle Hole just down the coast from Robin Hoods Bay which has the most amazing pebble/shell/fossil collecting beach and very few people. If you have smallish DCs it is fab.

BeenBeta · 14/04/2010 19:34

York is always great on a wet day. Castle Museum and Railway Museum or even just a walk along the City Walls.

Make sure you book several weeks ahead though if you want to go to the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Gmakes3 · 14/04/2010 20:58

Filey has a lovley beach. Place is small but lovely.
Bridlington has nice beach and has more shops pier amusments places to eat. Has Sewerby Park that you can walk to or go on a puffa train
Cayton has a visiter farm but has play area huge straw bale barn to play in, depends how mature your children are though
Scarborough bit bigger still has all the usual, North Bay quieter beach, Sealife, Peasholm Park
All above on same train line makes a nice change to taking the car
Whitby has as you know the abbey and all the usual.
Robin Hoods bay very quaint, heart attack inducing walk back from the beach at the bottom but worth a look
Went to the Deep in Hull not a million miles away
North York Moors
I think its great have 2 very small lo's and its does the job

elliemental · 14/04/2010 21:01

bex, no, but some family there. have spent past 20 years visiting area v regularly.

LittlePushka · 14/04/2010 21:29

Scarborough North Bay is really lovely and there is a great surf bar called Blue Crush just opened there recently. (south bay is typical candy floss/chips/amusements). great place called playdale Farm at Cayton a couple of miles south of Scarborough.

Flamingoland, near Pickering really worth a visit. Loads to to do and see,..even for pre-schoolers.

Nice to go on the North York Moors Railway - steam trains and some beautiful little stations (levisham, goathland etc) with great walking. You can get a train Pickering through to Whitby (also pretty, and home of the Endeavour)

Ravenscar to Robin Hoods bay is magic - as long as there is no sea fret in.

Filey is really pretty too.

Agree with Vicarinatutu about Dalby Forest (I live there!) great for mountain biking, go see the Bridestones, lovely little tea room called Jingleby Farm at the top end near the lake...there is a go Ape and good visitor centre

Loads of places to stay to suit all budgets - carvans, lodges, reasonable B & B, cottages, hotels

I am not a Yorkshire lass but I could go on all day about the part of north Yorkshire you are talking about.

Come on over...its magic!!

janeite · 14/04/2010 22:53

I wouldn't bother with Scarborough - can't imagine teenagers being at all impressed by it tbh.

York is lovely. Harrogate is gorgeous and good for shopping and cake eating.

The film/media museum in Bradford is superb (though I suspect that other than that and a good curry Bradford will offer little else for you).

How about the steam train to Haworth for the Bronte parsonage?

I've not been to Whitby before but it is on our must-do list.
