British Museum

We're going to London for 2 nights, and want to visit the British Museum.

It looks good, but I want to know has anyone been, and which bits are unmissable. I guess it is so big, you can't see all of it. I have 2 DD's (9 & 11) and want to see the Egyptian & Greek bit, as they have done this at school.

Anything else we shouldn't miss?

Get the dd to do the research?! If they've looked at the BM website, they can plan how they'd structure a visit

There's a small exhibition of the saxon hoard atm which they will remember seeing on the news. It's teeny and will only take five mins
once you have got there.

The director of the BM is currently doing the history of the world in 100 objects on Radio 4 and there is a spin off CBBC series. There's a brochure - maybe you can print one off or get them to send you one so you can use it to plan?

Must see if nothing else:

Egypt/mummies
Elgin Marbles & rosetta stone
Aztecs
Sutton hoo (saxon) treasure

the website is good for planning, but they also have very good children's trails (avialble in the info desk) which are themed eg mythical beasts - and take you round loads of different galleries. I've discovered loads of things I didn't realise they had there.

DH and I are going next week. I've looked at the website and fancy the exhibits in the 3hr visit, the saxon hoard and the things relating to the BBC 100 objects prog. I'm going to make a shortlist out of those things. Also want to go to the Royal Academy to see Van Gogh and his Letters and maybe the Chris Offili exhibit at the Tate. Those are quite pricey though. Can't believe the BM is free. Have fun!!

Looks fab; I can't wait. Thanks to you all.
