If I want to get the underground to go from Charing Cross to Euston to Tower Hill all in the same day is the a zone 1 and 2 travel card I would need?

they are all zone 1 so that should be all you need.

No idea, as I am a hard northerner not a southern shandy drinker but does this help?

Can't remember how much travelcards cost these days, but if you're likely to be going back to London, it might be worth getting a pre-pay Oystercard. It's a cash-loaded card that means you get discounted travel compared with single tickets you buy in machines and can be used on the bus as well (also get discounts). The drawback if you're coming only once is that you have to pay a £3 "deposit" when you buy it (in a Tube station or at any newsagent with a sky blue/dark blue Oyster logo outside it) so that wouldn't be offset in just a short trip.
