Two weeks around England and Scotland

We would like to go on a bit of an extended driving holiday round England and Scotland at the beginning of July.

The plan is to go from London to the Lake District to Edinburgh to Inverness back to Edinburgh to York return home.

We have between 10-14 days and a budget of £1000 for accomodation. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where we can stay - either reasonable priced hotels or self accomodation?

Will have nearly three year old Baby GoodBits too, so child friendly establishments and activities will be helpful too.

We stayed in a friendly b&b in Edinburgh once, it wasn't the hilton or anything, but nice. It was right in the center, was called the Osborne Hotel if i remember right.
